M-Audio AV40s

1. For those of you who own/tested the AV40s, what would you rate these monitors on a scale of 1-10 and why?

2. Do you think they are worth the $130 or so they sell on amazon?

3. What other speakers would you get that are priced around this?

4. Would a soundcard benefit this more or an amp?

Thank you to whoever assists me.

1-7.  They sound nice for the price and size

2-Yes

3-None that I know for this price.  There is better, but more expensive.

4-They have an internal amplifier.  Dont need another.

get the bx5as instead. they sound noticeably better

1 & 2) I would rate them around a 7, higher if you shop around and get them for cheaper (I've seen them as low as $100 before).

3) at that price range, you don't have too many options other than logitech stuff which isn't all that great

4) well the AV40s are self-powered, so that answers your question

I agree. I have both, and I have relegated my AV40's to television duty.

Though the BX5A cost considerably more.

Roughly $100. I picked up mine new for $219, and IMO I thought it was(the extra $100) money well spent. I wish I had bought the BX5A's first, but seeing as I did have use for the AV40s, I guess the money I spent on them was worth it.

That's a good price. They're almost $300 at my local store.

I got mine from Amazon.com. Right now they have them for $300 as well, but once in awhile you catch them cheap.

We got my little brother a pair of the AV-40s for his birthday. I would rate them a 10 for their cost to performance ratio. To get better sound you'd have to spend considerably more money. They do sound significantly better when placed on speaker stands and properly positioned relative to the listener. I could easily listen to them and enjoy them all day. I've had to talk myself out of buying a pair just to have on numerous occasions...

On the other hand, if you can afford the BX5a, it would give you the ability to add the BX10s (I think they've re-badged it the BXS10 or something) at a later date and have a pretty killer system.

Don't mean to bump a 1-month old thread , but how would you say these speakers are for your TV?

Is it worth the difference when they have to be used for listening music and play some live instruments through it?

They're not bad at all. In the menus I can adjust the bass and treble separately, so after messing with those for a bit, I got I sound I enjoy. Much better than the sound coming from the internal ones.
