Hello All,

Is there's any review comparing the DAC chip performances of Cypherlabs solo and Fostex HP-P1 ?

Cypherlabs solo is using Wolfson premium grade ( not sure if it is single or Dual) DAC

Fostex HP-P1 is using AKM4480 ( I trust it is premium grade 32 bits) DAC

Anyone owns both device and have a chances to compare the performance and characteristic of these two ?

Appreciate your feedback

Thanks

Raymond Lim

There's a thread about comparing the two already :-

Hi folks - here's a question that I'm sure has been answered more than once in this long thread and probably elsewhere, but i just don't have the time to wade through all the posts - anyway:  can you charge and play the algorhythm solo at the same time?  i know (or think) you can't charge your iphone/ipod at the same time because the line out is being used to connect to the solo.  Also, I'm using the fostex lod-usb cable, and wonder if the ALO cable really will really make a difference?  (I realize this is a sponsored thread, but it's an innocent question).  Along those lines, please note that I'm looking for a nice used LOD-USB if anyone has one they're interested in selling (see my classified).

Soundwise, the solo is great.  I notice that with the SR-71A and the JH-13 it may be a touch base heavy using the ipod touch 3g, but i'm still experimenting.  the klipsch image x5, for now, seems to provide a bit better highs, but again, i'm just starting to play around with various IEMs.  This could be because of the SR-71A, or because of the twag v2 i'm using with the JH13, which seems to flatten out the highs just a bit (granted, i'm at that age where i no doubt have some hearing loss regarding highs), but either way, the sound of my i-devices with the solo is great.  So, is the sound of my imod too, though :)  (no A/Bs yet - not sure I even want to compare 'em, though i didn't notice the increased bass or maybe the slightly cut off highs with the imod - though, as I mentioned, I'm still getting used to the solo).

563, yes you can charge and listen to the Solo at the same time. As you noted, the problem is that you can't charge and listen to the iDevice with the Solo.

Cypher Labs should provide a firmware update allowing for that (i.e. charging from the Solo when the Solo is plugged in).

I second that. Question is when and how?
I hope that Alo consider that much of their product also being sold to asia and other places other than usa.

If their distributors can perform this task as well will be a great gesture of customer service. :-)

yes, i'm curious too about how that would work.  would the only thing that would be plugged in to the wall then be the solo power cable?

regarding a firmware update - didn't cypher labs mention something about a problem getting permission from apple to allow the solo to charge the ipod/iphone because in order to get the apple certification, the solo would also need to be able to charge the ipad (something cypher said they weren't interested in doing?)

even if cypher were able to do the update, how would a firmware update work (how would you download it?  directly into the solo (hooking the solo directly up to a computer?)  or into the iphone/ipod touch/ipod classic?  .

My experience with solo and ipod classic confirm that the ipod drained battery to flat for about 9 hours of music
The fostex HP P1 connected with ipod classic charged the ipod while playing.

Both setup above are with dac connected to power. And i have both dac to conclude my findings

Ray, I'm sure this too has been discussed, but leaving aside size/charging issues, etc., purely sound-wise, how would you compare the two?  does this depend on source or IEMs?   Thanks.

Hi ,

I am pairing my CLAS solo with ALO continental V2 . and it works beautifully with many headphone and IEMs , it is because . the continental V2 comes with high/Low gain selection .

I have also heard many praises of Solo pairing with Ray samuel SR71B ( also with High/mid/low gain selection and both balanced and single end output).

These two will be a great choices for now ...until ALO RX mark 3 is available ....

also portable Amp. that could pair beautifully with Solo are Triad Audio L3 ( only singe end output) , it is bigger in size but it is a power monster.

Hope this is helpful.

The Solo does pair very nicely with the L3 but that is indeed a big and heavy amp.

Uh, oh...

Still loving my CLAS - in fact, more than ever.

However earlier this evening, I suddenly noticed that one of the 8 screws that holds the black metal case together is missing. I immediately grabbed a screwdriver and tightened the other 7. (In fact, they were all quite tight.) I have also searched my apartment with the "flashlight in a dark room" method but it is so tiny and I could have lost it earlier today (I assume) in so many different places.

Help, Ken! Any thoughts on how I can get my hands on one of these?  Thanks!
Oh, I hope Ken manages to send you one Paul. I too am loving my CLAS even more these days, also having gone balanced has given me even more enjoyment of its capabilities. Never have issues with battery life as every second day I just charge the stack up so they are all fully charged. Great thing about lithium batteries in that respect, might as well take advantage of the technology eh!

The appropriate time to recharge the battery of CLAS and RXII concerns me recently, because the small machines do not run out of power at the same time - thus very inconvenient on the road.

Are you saying we can recharge CLAS (and RXII) on a regular basis, without first waiting for the battery power to run out?

Like for iPhone, I have heard that the recharge should be better done when the battery level drops below 20% (this would prolong the battery life).  Thanks

Yes, it is a lithium and you can charge it any time. It is good practice for the first couple of times to charge and fully discharge but after that there should be no issues. I had that from Ray of Ray Samuels audio when I asked him about charging my amp and they use similar lithium batteries!
