Good Entry-Level Business-related Jobs?

Kirosia is looking for work in Massachusetts, and he has little idea of what jobs to apply for. So far I've only looked into project management and operations, but I'm open to anything with a good career path. I'm an International Business Major with no field experience, decent GPA (3.6), and am located near Salem, MA, USA. Also, if anyone can recommend any local companies/positions, that would be great!

It's tough to get a job with no experience, even with a degree. If you have no connections, I think a temp agency would be a good place to start. Lots of entry level jobs that allow you to build experience and network.

Yeah, I might have to consider a temp agency, though my job is search is still in its infancy. I've been using monster and my school's website to look for work, but poor credentials are a definite hindrance.

I suggest you map out your academic experience to produce a marketable resume.  Just look for entry level jobs and see if there are apples to apples with your experience/study.  Probably the best ammunition you may need to get is networking with faculty, friends, family, and acquaintances to leverage your chances of finding your ideal job.  You'll be surprised what a little conversation can take you, even with strangers.

Good luck.

Kirosia,

Don't know about the situation in MA, but have you considered government jobs?  They will get you into the door and you can build your experience from there.  Just don't become a "lifer".

Not sure if I have any applicable skills for the government work, plus I'm not sure if there are any jobs in MA. As for networking... I don't really have anyone other than you guys.

you can try for an analyst position at one of the many consulting firms in MA. It's boring money work, but it pays well and looks good on your resume.

GL!

Don't worry, you're looking for entry level positions, right?  I got a Business Administration degree (with emphasis on Human Resource) and had no relevant experience either, yet I landed an Analyst position.  And before I know it, I was working on accounts totaling over $300 million/year....and I was the only person in the whole State doing that job.

Not sure about the MA government situation....with budget deficit or not.  Maybe there's a hiring freeze.  I was just throwing out possible options for you.

there are always student networking events taking place - have you made use of your school's career services office?

I have, they gave me tips on my resume, which I uploaded to their online job database.

Nice. I'll just be glad to get a job at the moment, it's the boredom and fear that's killing me.

in the mean time, why not look out for companies that interest you, and send them your resume?  with well crafted cover letters specifically written for each company, you stand a better chance than youd think to stumble across something - not to mention many smaller firms will pass your resume along to their friends

i know this sounds daunting, but a well polished self-marketing campaign is better than sitting in fear and boredom :)

I looked up a bunch of headphone audio-related companies, but many aren't hiring locally (or exist here at all). As for cover letters.. I don't really have much to say, other than "I'm a quick learner and like pretzels", so I just avoid them unless required. I know, I should try regardless.

Finally got a legitimate interview, though it will apparently be followed by a case study. (Import/export field, unknown subject) This worries me.. though I've done quite a few such papers so I'll have to re-read my old work and texts. Any experiences with case studies?
