M50 straight cable to coiled cable (pic + micro tutorial)

After watching an episode of How it's Made decided to try it on my old M50 cable that had been trimmed.

All I did was wrap it around some small round stock then in the oven at about 300f for an hour. Then just coiled it backwards and you're done!

I just have to put a mini XLR on it now and its ready to use again, no more cable envy!

I had no where to store the 10' cable (or however long it is)

I have a short straight cable for the phones right now (about 4 feet) and I just wanted something a little longer but not messy.

Amazing!  Thanks for posting that.

You're sure there's nothing bad that can happen to the connector?  I suppose it doesn't matter if you're planning on replacing it...

The way I see it if the plastic cable holds up the connector and wires should be just fine.

I haven't checked the resistance yet though, so fingers crossed.

Racer, what episode was that? I'd love to see the video.

I tried it on my own, but didn't reverse the coil... didn't work out so hot.

Also, do you have the specs on the cable you are using in the image (wire gage, jacket size, etc.?)

Took me forever to find it, the episode is called "Retractable Cords, Wood Frame Sports Cars, and Sushi"

I'm not sure what the episode number is (7x12? depends on the network I think)

Cable is stock from the M50, I never looked a the wire as it was basically junk to me so it didn't matter if I melted it (which is what I expected).

Awesome.

Thanks.

Unfortunately the ipod plastic isn't quite as tough

20min at 250f melted the dock a little, still works but looks funny. The cable also isn't quite as springy  as I would like.

Finally put a connector on it, and it still works!
