Ripping files in FLAC and ALAC

What are some of the good, free programs to rip FLAC files? And are there better programs to rip ALAC other than iTunes?

EAC can rip to FLAC. So can dBpoweramp I imagine.

 

I think you can set them up to do ALAC, too.

I highly recommend Rip!

Open source audio ripper, that support Accurate Rip and all the most popular audio codecs.

thanks for the link.  do you use it as well?  it sais that this version may be unstable..is there something to be concerned about?   I am also looking to try another ripping software that is easy to use and set up (not like eac) .  until now i did all my ripping to flac with winamp.

Yes, I have been using Rip since its first initial release. A few bugs back then, but not had any issues for the last two(ish) years now.

So definitely worth a try!

I believe so. Meaning - it do have built in FLAC encoder, which I believe is version 1.2.1. .

Another relevant question about Rip is whether it will work with your system. It's Mac-only software, and if you've been using Winamp, that would seem to suggest you're a Windows user.

oops...my mistake .  I didn't see any mentioning for mac in the op.

No mentioning of MS Windows in the OP either.

So I just assume it is Mac OS X since iTunes is mentioned... Both by Apple

ohh, sorry, i use windows OS, but use iTunes for my music collection. Making a switch to Foobar2000 however. Since iPods do not support FLAC (not sure if true), thats why i'm asking about ALAC

I think you should consider your needs for CD ripping and file conversion carefully, and see if dBpoweramp Reference would be worth the price. You could use EAC or foobar2000 for ripping CDs to FLAC, and the free version of dBpoweramp Music Converter to transcode your FLACs to ALAC, but if you want a more comprehensive set of ripping/encoding tools, it might be worth it to invest in dBpoweramp Reference.

Try this http://sites.google.com/site/qaacpage/ it's a commandline program to wrap Itunes Quicktime encoding API and it supports ALAC, from the limited reading I have done. You should be able to set it up with EAC or foobar I think. Good luck.

I recently used dbpoweramp to convert about 7,300 ALAC files to FLAC using my Dell and Windows XP, it worked like a charm! Good luck.
