Depends on the headphones, but for open - better soundstaging, clarity, etc. Using closed headphones you'll likely get more bass, some isolation from outside noise and so on.

I would also suggest the AD700, I used to have them my self and I agree with every one else about them fitting what you need.

2nded, the AD700 's seem like your cup of tea. At BeachCamera they are $84 with free shipping and probably no tax. Well within your price range.

The ad700s are magical with classical!

Go for open, they sound much better for the $.  The only reason to get closed imo (I own 5) is to block sound so only get them if you are somewhere noisy or don't want sound to leak out.

Can it bring in too much noise to annoy me?

I agree. Unless you need isolation or don't want sound to leak then open headphones are a better value for the money.  The SRH440 is a fantastic closed headphone for $100 but something like the AD700, DT440, or MS-1 will still sound better (at least on a technical level).
