HD800 withdrawal syndrome - Page 2

post #16 of 19
Yep. The HD-800 is a lot nicer in person. Some members decry the plastic, but if thatms the secret to their sound, it's entirely forgiveable.

I picked up my pair just about a year ago. I was highly skeptical and thought the HD-800 was just a bunch of overpriced hype. Then I tried them out at CanJam Los Angeles last year. I directly compared them to the HD-650. Damn, were they good. IpodPJ was kind enough to let me plug his pair into my rig. That did it. I sold off several pairs (including my much-loved HD-650 and K-501) to pay for the HD-800.

It turned out to be a good gamble. A year in, the "new toy" phase is well over and I still listen to the HD-800 90% of the time. The Quads are better and I retain passion for the K-1000 (it comes out for serious listening sessions) but the HD-800 is just wonderful. If you enjoyed it, get a pair. They're not cheap and demand the best, but they're great headphones. We're lucky to have them in production and on the market. A lot of the other great headphones weren't appreciated while fhey were in production.

Thread Starter

Well, the woo setup, they let me connect my laptop through usb to PS Audio Digital Link Dac -> WA2 -> HD800.

I have same computer to V-Dac -> Heed Canamp -> HD800.

I don't want to say they sound the same because it's been a long time since I've heard the Woo setup. But I didn't miss anything with my setup, so at least to me, nothing important was different between the two.

If you've watched Fate/Stay Night, the lion is from that one episode where Saber went shopping... I'm not sure if there are still vendors selling this anymore though XD

Hey UE, have you had a chance to audition the T1 yet?

Congrats, pyo2004. I was wondering how long you'd last. I hope you didn't have to drop out of grad school to pay for them.

Seriously, before I stepped into Head-Fi, I wouldn't have considered spending more than $100 on  headphones. But that all changed when I took the plunge and, like you, went for the K701. Blew me away. I followed up with a cheap amp that gave me more of the entire spectrum, and I was hooked -- hooked into the "more" part of the experience, that is.

How to justify the expense? As you say, "I figure I listen to music so much, it's worth the investment."

And it really is. It's all about the beauty of music that's right there when you want it. And the funny thing about that beauty is the "Holy s**t, I wish _____ could hear this!" syndrome where you want to share it with people who matter to you -- and the world.

I think this is where Head-Fi forums come in for most of us -- they fulfill a sincere and honest desire to share a beautiful experience. As simple as that.

Anyway, like Uncle Erik, I've settled in with the HD800 and my other cans are seeing less and less headtime. And for the first time since I joined Head-Fi, I feel satisfied and don't feel the need to reach out for the newer cans that are popping up.

Of course, this steady state will probably last only as long as the next game breaker. But in the meantime, heaven ain't so bad.
