Just recently I obtained a pair of custom tips for the RE0 through a local audiologists, sourced from one of his standard suppliers of hearing aids.

I noticed that nowadays more labs that traditionally only supplied heaing aids now also offer custom IEM, and cheaper than Ultimate Ears or Westone. But of course these labs are biased towards dual armature drivers.

IMG_3871.JPG

RE0 with supplied tips have more punchy bass, somehow faster drums and guitar strings. The custom tips deliver a louder and fuller sound, even despite the lesser bass. Yes, it appears contradictory, but it is my evaluation. With my unamped iPod Nano I prefer the custom tips. The custom tips have a relatively long channel from RE0 to the tip's exit, with a sharp bend. That may adversely affect sound quality.

The single and bi-flange tips that come with the RE0 sound best with a relatively loose fit. One needs to regularly adjust the fit which can become quite bothersome. Custom tips on the other hand provide a firm and at the same time comfortable fit that is no more influenced by moves or weight of the cable.

So I am to choose between sound quality, comfort and firm fit. A "naked" driver with flexible cable routing could be embedded in the tip, closer to the ear canal, but still flush with the earlap (inconspicious and for use in bed). I also believe that a full range dynamic driver is easier to drive than two- or even three-way dual armature drivers. I mean we dream about an IEM that sounds superb straight from the MP3 player.

I have an older pair of custom IEMs from a small German maker (two-driver, balanced armature) which are clearly outdone by the RE0, with and without custom tips. But that one-guy company is very customer oriented, free repairs, upgrades etc. and very interested in innovation. He might be interested to try your drivers. He mainly works for musicians. Hence a closed design for maximum isolation is a must. Or I ask "my" audiologist in town again.

He also makes earplugs with variable isolation. Very nice when listening to excessively loud live music. And on request he does the custom IEMs with variable insulation, too.

Did you make any prototype custom shells from for the new driver? Length of channel from driver to exit and choice of material (soft/hard) will bias sound signature. Any recommendations would be highly welcome.

My taste and reference is coined by many years of listening to full-size and lightwight headphones (Stax Gamma Pro, HD580 & HD25, AKG K1000 & K271, PortaPro, recently RE0, PK2 and PK1) and near-field studio monitors (Geithain RL601 with Basis1 subwoofer). I prefer neutral and unspectacular sound. I can life without massive bass. Comfort, practicability and value for money rule over the hunt for the next infinitesimal improvement (of just alteration) of sound quality.

Fang, please, send a pair (better two) to me. You know my love to your products as well as my modding skills. Just a reminder - check RE252km and TM5 links in my sig to check what I did with RE252 and PK1 correspondingly. I thought to make a customs with RE252 drivers, but I was afraid to ruin the drivers while disassembling. Let my dream come true.

I will do this with a help of a local hearing protection clinic, like I did this before with ER-4P custom tips.

Fang, would love a chance to try these out. I have been debating getting a set of customs. I have talked to my local audiologist and they have someone that does their hearing aids that can also do custom IEM's. My wife is also dieing to get a set of customs made so I know it will be a fight to see who gets them done first. If you sent me a pair, it would either be me or her getting the custom IEMS. Whichever one of us got them done would happily do a full review. She uses IEM's all the time and I use mine everyday at work. A set of customs excites us both greatly.

Who am I to lie. If I only got one pair, she would get them as I would never hear the end of it........Would love to get 2 sets of drivers so we can both do it together......

Thanks for your consideration.

I would like a pair to enjoy a new hearing experience! Will send them to Fisher Hearing-InEarZ branch for a custom mold. How the product will be customized by them; well, I need the drivers first!

I would like a pair if available?

If this is not already completed, please consider me for a pair as well. I'd love to have Unique Melody make me another pair of customs, perhaps a bit different from my other armature based customs.

if this is still avaliable i would like to be cnsidered for a pair as well and i'll contact null audio in singapore to make mine thanks

Would love a pair if this is still available. First a jump from RE-0 to RE-252 and now from 252 to customs .. Wouldn't get better than this .:D

Would love to be considered for this opportunity.  I like to consider myself a Dynamic Driver afficianado.  Most likely I would go through ACS to get some silicone customs done since I like their work.  I had been looking to get some tips for my Monster Miles Davis regardless.

Thank you!

At this point I'd like to continue this thread for the 5 of us receiving the drivers, in order to share info and save people from doing unnecessary work. So far I have contacted Fisher, UM, and ACS with questions about remolding these.

*ACS advised they will NOT remold anything, period. They are concerned about liability/driver damage, so they will only handle their own products. Don't bother to contact them.

*Unique Melody needs to see a picture of the driver to determine if they can do a remold. I don't know why, but that's what they want. As soon as I receive my package, I will take pics and send them off to UM.

This is the most promising option so far.

*I have not heard back from Fisher Audio yet. I don't want to seem like I am pestering them, so if someone else wants to email them, go for it. Post the results here.

*I have not tried contacting any other companies such as Sensaphonics or Westone. Since I have never heard of them doing remolds, I figure they will not start now. Also the price would likely be prohibitive. But if anyone has any other ideas, feel free to contact them and post results.

Bottom line, as of right now UM is the only place that might possibly do it. Fisher may be an option but it is less likely, as I have always heard they don't do dynamic drivers, and the SF5EB that they did was not that great.
