Ultrasone lost their massive bass... due to burn in? - Page 2

Did you ever do very high volume burn-in? I would discourage any high volume burn-in just to be on the safe side. I have had suspicions about my pro 900 getting less distinct/punchy bass after a few thousand hours of use, but unless I get another pair I can't try to test my guess. Kees cotton modding, recabling, or upgrading around the pro 900 is the way to improve the bass punch, not buying new pro 900's :p.

That's true - if we assume burn in is factual and that it did reduce the bass punch, then you'd have to buy new Pro900's every 40 hours of use to get that 'new and punchy' state.

It's not the punch that's gone (imo the Pro 900 never had any, and if anything's happened in that area, it's possibly gotten slightly better).

It's the deep, deep bass like what you get from a sub woofer that's toned itself down.

But it's probably just that I've gotten used to it. Maybe if I feel crazy enough, I'll buy a new pair later in the summer and sell these, and then we can get confirmation. :)

...What? So you're hearing a lush relaxed Ultrasone Pro 900? What in your opinion has punch, or rather what is your definition?

Well, the audio terminology sticky seems to be gone from this forum, so I can't read up on the accepted definitions here...

...and I must admit that I've never attempted to describe bass anything else than quantity and clearness, but when it comes to mids/high having punch or not, my definitions is pretty much that if it almost physically feels as if the drummer slaps you across the face then yes the sound has punch. :) My D2000 and Triple.fi both have this, while with the Pro 900 even the hardest drums feels like a lady stroking your chin (and thus only suitable for electronic music).

I use Joe Slam and the Spaceship by Harry Connick Jr and Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer as examples of where you can find drums recorded in a way so that they totally smack you in the face with the right equipment.

If you share your definition and some track titles, perhaps I can update my opinion, but as of now, the Pro 900 is skimmed milk in that area. :)

It's because the pro 900 tries to diffuse lows and highs around the headstage. If you want punch, try to cover the middle upper hole as suggested in Kees' cotton mod. Will void warranty, but a good option if you are crazy enough to buy a new pro 900 for unburned in sound :p.

Ok, oddly enough, I just found two tracks with bass that seemed to if not punch, at least try to poke a hole in my eardrums:

Whistle for Will, and also In the Privacy of Our Love from the album Made in the Dark by Hot Chip.

BUT, and I keep forgetting this: The Ultrasone Pro 900 needs to be absolutely perfectly positioned on your head in order to hear this! And that's due to the off-center angled drivers of that S-Logic thing, which does seem to work, but is damn fiddly to get right and most likely not everyone will (some of the very deep bass also returned once I managed to find that sweet spot again).

I knew that after a few days of burn in, the bass will settle for a bit....but still is present.
