Audioengine A2 vs Studiophile AV40

Thread Starter

Hi. After trying with different  headphones for a long time I want to do my first incursion into decent quality speakers.  Right now I can't spend much but am a bit tired of headphones so  I'm looking for best stereo speakers 150 dollars can buy .  I intend to use them primarily with music , but also movies from time to time. Also if they are small it would be nice as I don't have much space in my bedroom.

So far I've read very positive feedback on Audioengine A2 and M-Audio Studiophile AV40.

Which one is better? Are there other candidates given my budget  that I should take into consideration? Thanks in advance.

Many reviews comparing the two. The AV 40 come out on top, but this mostly depends on how you like your music to sound. I would go for the AV40. I was going to get them but the store ran out of stock and I got ESI nEar 05 for no extra $$, si I can't give you a review of the AV40, sorry.

Get the A2s, they look SOO much better.  seriously though, i'm picking up a set of A2s as soon as i can afford it.

Lol looks mean nothing in the audio world. Also, personally, I prefer the looks of the AV40. Not that I care about what either of them look like.

Nah, looks mean something, not as much as SQ, but they mean something nonetheless, at least for some people. The A2 doesn't score too badly on SQ, going by the reviews, and i like the looks of them.

isn't the ESI like double the price? lol. how'd you find 'em anyhow? I'm half contemplating  gettin' something but I don't wanna blow the budget either.

Most reviews I've seen place the A2 above the AV40, and the A2 has better specs on paper as well. On the other hand, you can get the AV40's for half the price of the A2. I got mine for $110 (Cnd).

yeah they are a bit more than double the price. I bought the AV40 only to find out they were out of stock and they gave me the ESI nEar 05 for no extra

I have to say, I love my A2s. I do like M-Audio equipment, but I haven't heard the AV40s. In any case, you're going to need to save some coin for a sub, and if you're making a budget price/performance rig, I'd have to say I'd take a serious look at the AV40s and put the extra money towards a sub.

You figure you're gonna cross the sub somewhere between 70 and 100 Hz (thereabout) and the "magic" of the A2s is their surprising full-spectrum sound in a small package. Adding a sub makes that a little moot. I still love the rig, but it's true that I wish I'd paid about half for it.

Cheers. R
