Tagging is the way to go. Browsing through folders will get a pain when your lib gets bigger and bigger. I find the easiest way is using Winamp. With the right plug-ins you can do almost anything within the same application.And as stated earlier; use sensible genre, but also ratings and so-called smart play lists. That way, when you change something, these will get updated automatically. When you sync your PMD, this will be updated too in the same way.

I'm kind of shocked nobody has mentioned that if the OP puts rockbox on that ipod then folder browsing and drag and drop file transfer will both be possible.
