THE SONY D-88 Discman is the pinnacle of Sony making the smallest of everything. No portable CD player before or after even now achieved the tiny dimensions of the D-88 with world class sonic performance. Released in 1988 this player has an adjustable centering point to accept the standard sized CD which a metal bar folds neatly into the players lid to allow nearly half of CD to extend outside the player. To watch the disc spinning on your desk is a conversation piece none other can match. The quality of sound this machine produces will amaze and certainly please EVEN AUDIOPHILES. The player will also play the standard mini CD disc which is enclosed entirely inside the Discman. Mini disc pre-recorded discs are easily available on Ebay and other sources.

CONDITION
Cosmetic - This fine example is NEARLY FLAWLESS. Only ONE very small nick of paint on front can be seen. There are no other marks, dents or damage to player itself. Even the bottom is untouched showing the minimal use well cared for life this player history has. The battery pack on bottom side has a very light surface scratch one inch ( 2.54 cm). The photos speak for themselves and let them guide your judgment of condition. One touch of a permanent black marker fine point and very tiny mark on front is erased visually. Showing my honesty in selling I could have easily done this and sold item as FLAWLESS but integrity is earned each day and mine will be intact until I die.
BOX– The original box is fully intact but is somewhat tatty in condition. A boxed D-88 is
a extraordinary find no matter what condition of box. The value of any vintage
electronic device is significantly higher with original box.

MECHANICAL
The player works flawlessly all functions work including repeat and shuffle. Unit accesses all tracks quickly including the last tracks on discs ( a typical problem of PCDP’s ( Portable Compact Disc Player ) is lubrication dries on gear drive not allowing laser to move to last tracks of a disc.) Once again ALL tracks work on this player , see video. The display window on nearly all D-88 players usually do not work due to very thin LCD surface. Caution is urged when cleaning LCD window no pressure should be exerted on surface of LCD. It is a very common problem but does not effect function of player. THIS PLAYER has partially working LCD indicator. The right digit shows clearly but one of the 7 lines making up digit the bottom line does not show. The left digit for 10 -29 does not show up. It is easy to tell what track by 1-9 do show and next set of 1-9 indicates 10-19. The battery symbol shows clearly. The Repeat and Shuffle words bottom left of screen when repeat button is depressed do not show but do function. I could only get battery to hold a charge of 1 volt but it does hold charge but not enough to power unit. Batteryhas NO signs of leakage. Someone more familiar with battery design and how to successfully recharge older batteries may be successful getting it to 4 volts. I can also provide options for easily available new batteries ( 2) that can be soldiered together and install in holder accepting charge from original or aftermarket A/C mains charger. Also explanation of newer Lithium Ion battery option but requires removal of battery and charged with charger designed for these batteries. This unit can be made to fully function portable if new owner wants. Original Sony cable with L&R RCA male inputs to connect player to any Amplifier/Pre-amp or cassette recording deck. The original headphones are NOT INCLUDED WITH AUCTION. For reference the original headphones are ear bud style Sony MDR-E464. I have a pdf copy of the Service Manual which can be emailed to buyer upon request.
A/C Mains charger/adapter. I will include a UKSONY adapter that CAN be used with this player BUT NOTE : the polarity needs to be switched so center is negative. This is easily done by cutting and re splicing power wire OR use a reversing adapter plug. This adapter was originally for a SONY Watchmen FDL-390BE and is a 9 volt 650 mA unit model number AC-E390. The original adapter for the D-88 was model #AC-950W 9 volt DC 600 mA for USA
You can easily buy brand new A/C to DC voltage converters to work with this D-88. THE FOLLOWING VOLTAGE CONVERTERS ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH AUCTION.
Prices are $10 to $17 at following links. The mA rating only needs to be equal to or higher than the rated 600 mA of the D-88. mA is only critical if lower than rating of player then it will not work. A higher rating only means that it CAN provide higher but unit will draw only its rated 600 mA in the case of D-88.
