Noob help with CMOY/Mini^3 - Page 2

The second grommet does not replace the Jack [J5]. It is in addition to it. When you cut the holes in the Altoids tin. The hole is bigger then the knobs and jacks.  With the Potentiometers there are knobs that cover up the holes (yes the pots are on the out side). With the  input and output jacks there are nuts that cover the holes. With the LED the grommet covers the hole, but nothing covers the power jack hole.  If you buy a second grommet you can use it on the power jack hole and it will look a lot better.

When I built mine I was more concerned with cost, so I bought everything from mouser. My cost was like $30-35.  I bought plastic knobs and the power jack but it looks like you cannot get it at mouser any more.

If you are going for looks then yes buy the Digi knobs as the do look nice.

In regards to the Opamp, with this Cmoy you can change the opamp anytime you want. They are not soldered in.  You can just take one out and pop another one in. So you can buy a couple and see which one you like the best.

With the resistors and capacitors I'm not going to be any help.  Just basically the more expensive ones are supposed to be better. I do know that the batteries need to be in a series not just connect to the same spot.

Ah I get what you mean, just took a closer look at the picture.

Yeah I didn't see them either, I was intending on going with Digi anyways so it's no big deal. Aren't some Opamps soldered in with "brown dog" adapters or whatever?

Apparently, if you're using one battery, you need a virtual ground, with two, you won't need it. I just need to find a guide then. Problem is, I read that on Gain 11 resistors, one 9v battery won't do it.

Did you use a hole puncher as they said to use? I could probably drill into the tin, it would be cleaner and closer cut.

Trust me don't try and drill the tin, use a hole punch and ream it out to the right size

If you are still looking for CMoy kit, here it is:

Nah, I'm just about ready to order my parts, thanks though. I'm going to go for the Opamp 2228 from Mouser and be done with it: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Texas-Instruments/OPA2228PG4/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtCHixnSjNA6DpVD9XlU353zbqPuAgfj84%3d

"Wire the red lead of the first connector to V+. Wire the black lead of the second connector to V-. Then connect the remaining two wires together (red to black)." Doesn't seem too hard to wire in batteries.

I apparently don't need the High gain resistors if I'm using the bass knob unless the boost is too strong; I'll get it anyways just because it's $.18 and shipping is pretty bad if I were to get them separately.

"Omit the bass boost switch and both RB resistors (leave them out!). If bass boost is found to be too strong, install 51k resistors in RB_L and RB_R to reduce the intensity by a factor of two."

Edit: Ordered them, can't wait to get them.

I was looking at making a JDS Cmoy, selected all my parts from mouser then found out shipping was 39 dollars...

The single battery and more elegant looks appeal to me, I don't want to built my own schematic (although it would be fun messing around with active ground).

If you are only buying a couple parts go with digikey and use US mail (probably have to live in US/Canada).  Select Priority Mail (the one without a days estimate) as the shipping method.  Should come out to $2-$3 shipping.

For big orders in the US, mouser is usually cheaper and lets you buy most things in the quantity you would need for a DIY project (digikey is minimum 10 on most resistors).  I got $100+ in parts and it came out to ~$9 shipping through UPS.  And they have free back order shipping as long as you keep the back order as one package.

You can't go with one website, I tried that. Also, the site says $8/9 shipping, 9 for DigiKey, 8 for Mouser. The prices are outdated though, I just picked the lowest shipping possible on both.

Nah I think the prices are right, it's just that I live in Australia.

Not the shipping prices, the prices of the items itself. I found some have changed. Also, I live in the US and the shipping seems... I guess necessary for the protection of the products but still.
