Are Audio-Gd DAC's all that? - Page 3

^ I had to pay $40 for the DHC wires, it was a month ago.

I'm saving up for a dac right now, are there any reviews/impressions with this re-wiring?

I have it in my headphone cables, my DAC, and am wiring my Transporter with it. It is 25 gauge stranded OCC Copper.  I personally feel it is the best wire I've ever used.  I do not like silver plated copper, as I've used it in several applications and it always seemed to have an unpleasant tone and edging towards tinny treble.  The Nucleotide is very neutral and natural, with no restriction of dynamics.

Really?  Well it makes sense since Kingwa had to buy it.  I supplied my own Nucleotide wire to him.
I also send him solid core OCC silver for the AES input, and Illuminati coax wire for the BNC input.  I can't remember what I used for the lone RCA coax input.  I also had him disconnect the RCA coax input from the combo BNC/RCA input, since I didn't want the RCA to act as an antenna for EMF.  I was never keen on the combo input idea.

^ Yep.

I ended up swapping the Coax wires to Illuminati, just like the one that Peete uses in his RE1 and VH Audio's OCC silver/cotton for the signal wires. I like them better than the DHC. It was all wired with DHC wires.

Yeah, you can go with OCC silver for the signal wire because it does have slightly better conductivity than OCC copper, but I prefer keeping the silver wire for the digital realm where I feel it truly excels.  I like a very dynamic, natural tone and in my experience even the highest purity OCC silver takes away from that slightly.  OCC silver seems to have slightly faster and more treble presence with a decrease in bass presence, texture and impact.  OCC copper is more well-rounded.  SPC (silver plated copper) just seems to muck everything up and I'm not sure why so many "audiophiles" use it, other than the fact that it is cheap.

Of course there is no scientific evidence to back up any of our opinions on this. :)  Anything in the audible range should not be affected by conductor type, unless it is fatally flawed.  Only capacitance, resistance, or inductance should have an affect.

What phones and what headphone amp are you using it with?  If you are using the Phoenix I can understand why you might want a little more treble presence.

lol, I love how a thread that started as "questioning" whether Audio-gd stuff was "all that" turned into positive discussions and excitement for the products instead.  Might tell you something there.  :D

Heh, I was just going to make a similar comment. I've never heard nor owned any Audio-GD products, but all these threads about Audio-GD has definitely piqued my interest. Do they have any retailers in US besides Pacific Valve?

I'm in the same boat as you, jenneth!  From looking around it seems that buying directly from Audio-GD is cheaper than Pacific Valve, so I've been looking into that.  If I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me immediately (I'm still learning!).

Im not sure on Pacific Valve Prices, but shipping can really jack up the price if you order over seas.

I know we've gone vastly OT, but I just wanted to say, silver electroplated copper seems to suffer from the harshness, but silver annealed copper doesn't.

Back on topic though, I would like to see some more experienced people compare the Ref 7 with other high-end DACs.

Ok, someone send me a Ref 7 and I will happily compare it to my PWD, or my Exemplar DAC, or my Exemplar modified Music Hall 25.2 DAC, or my Headroom Desktop Portable, or even my uDAC. That's it for my DAC's, but I could also compare it to my Disc players and those are.....

FYI No such thing as thread jacking this thread. I've already stated that the original reason for this thread was in error, please take it wherever you'd like.

Good luck getting someone to send you their Ref 7.   For one, I doubt anyone will want to be without it, and second Audio-gd products have been known to be rather delicate and don't always fare well in shipping.

Perhaps you should post an inquiry for anyone in your area who might have one and would be willing to meet up with you.

Send someone with Wiley Coyote as their avatar your Ref 7 ;)

LMAO!

Ok my mistake...40 isn't bad I suppose. I'd send him the wire of choice as a affordable alternative or go the DIY route (at home). SPC and me don't get along.

Peete.
