Nice case for my DIY Headphone amp!

I just trash picked a hoard of old Cell phone stuff, and along with it, was an old Cellular transceiver in a beautiful black aluminum case. It's the size of a CD jewl case, and about three cases high. You know, those nice aluminum cases they used to make external modems out of! I took the stuff home and I was like jeeze, what on earth am I going to do with this... Then I picked up the transceiver, took it apart, and i was like WOW, what a NICE chassis for my headphone amp!

Just thought I'd tell someone.

Hey! Theres even a nice 12v 500mA adapter I can use to power it... It pays to pick trash.

Nah, I just figured everybody already did this. My current amp is about 50% scavenged components. Cases are good finds. I am currently looking at both an old power inverter and a small wooden jewlery box. I think the Box would make a great amp. I could fit 12AA's in and have plenty of room for circuts. I'm thinking of making a 47 amp in it, not sure though.

Glad to hear I'm not alone on this one. I trash pick EVERYTHING and scavange the parts out of it. About the only thing I do purchase are resistors.. Everything else, my trusty desoldering equipment helps me out with.

Too busy to go dumpster-diving yourself? Live far from industrial parks?

Let these guys do the work for you:
http://www.allelectronics.com/

Once in a while I get bored and order a big box of crap from them ($6 shipping for a box the size of a coffin - woo!) and spend evenings pulling them apart. The headphone product selector they had for $15 was a real steal:
- rack-mount aluminum case
- 8 super-nice dpdt relays
- lcd (2x16, backlit)

Of course, it's kind of random what they've got on any given day...
