Having used the RE0 + Shure black tips every day on the subway to school. I am increasingly fed up about the lack of isolation on my RE0 on the subway, as I find myself turning up the volume up quite a bit just to hear dialogue. Also, I hear no bass and detail because of the background noise. I decided to use my old E2c with white silicon tips today to hear the difference in sound quality and level of isolation. I've always known my Shures isolate more, but I didn't expect a huge difference I heard today. It was almost silent. I heard the dialogue without turning up the volume 20% higher, and my music had bass!
Unforunately I ran out of the white tips, and the black tips suck, with the supplied RE0 tips being even worse. I heard Etymotic ER4 has the best non custom mold tip isolation out there. Does ER4's triple flanged tips fit on the RE0? Is there a cheaper place to buy the tips other than from Etymotics? $15 + 10 USD for shipping for 5 pairs of tips is VERY hard to justify to parents.
I estimate the background noise I deal with on the subway is around 80-90dB. Using RE0 + Shure black tips lowers it to around 60-70dB (but I listen to music at this volume). E2c + silicon tips lowers it to around 45-55dB.
I love the E2c's shape. It fit my ears PERFECTLY like it is custom molded for me, and it also helps block around 5dB more noise. Too bad they don't sound as good as my RE0.
EDIT: Does Shure's triple flange tips work on the RE0? How do they compare to Etymotic's tips?
