FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier with the ASTRO mixamp

Hi,

Newbie here. I was wondering if anyone know if the Fiio E5 will have any issues if i connect it to my Astro Mixamp?

I have the AD700 and the Sens PC 350 and I use them for my XBOX 360 needs. Both sets a pretty burned in and sound excellent. However, the Astro mixamps volume is not as high as I want it to be is some occasions. I just need more volumes so I planning to hook up my XBOX to my Astro Mixamp and then connect it to the Fiio E5 then to my headset BUT I am just curios if it would be an issue as far as the DD 5.1 sound coming from the Astro to the Fiio E5 to my headset would be clear. I am sure I would get the extra volume that i want BUT I also want to get the DD5.1.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

It might work but at the same time that would be two amplifers in the signal, and that's a lot of distortion. For gaming it might be fine, but it seems strange you'd that much volume, are you sure your hearing's going to be fine.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with my hearing LOL. I don't know if you have a Astro Miaxamp but the volume is not "that" high. It's good enough. When I hook up my AD700 and Pc350 on my Sony Vio F the sound is phenomenal. The soundstage on both cans are awesome. When i play on my 360 the volume is just enough, I just need a little more. Especially when I am watching videos through my 360.

I read awesome reviews with the Fiio E5 (only 20bucks) BUT like i said I don't want to loos my 5.1 sorround sound. Thank you

You won't lose the 5.1 for sure, DH mixes 5ch to 2ch stereo... the problem for me whether it'll actually get louder - what happens when you connect two amplifiers in series?

I don't know what will happen when i connect two amps. I see you thought about distortion BUT i do not think this would cause any issue. If I am keeping the  5.1 SS then I will be happy. Like I said I use both headsets just for Xbox360 gaming only. The most important part for me is soundstage and the extra volume for hear low queues in the game. But when I get i will def. let you and everyone know how it is.

I searched everywhere online and I do no not see anyone posted anything regarding this. Also, I know for a fact that the Astro Mixamp just does not provide much power to my AD700 and my PC350 (I tried three diff. Astro amps) Because when I connect them cans to my PC and watching my Neil Peart DVD (Rush Live at Rio) drum solo, it's like a piece of heaven. As soon as I put on my AD700 and that music plays in my head "clouds parted, angels with trumpets appear and a ray of sun shine hits my face LOL"

I’m also interested in this topic.  According to the Astro website’s specs, the mixamp (2010 version) has an output spec of 70 mW at 32 Ohm per channel.  This drives my current gaming headphones fine.

I read that other mixamp users have added amps between their mixamps and headphones.  I have not yet tried this.

As Ypoknons stated, the mixamp uses dolby headphone processing on the 5.1 surround input signal and outputs 2 channel stereo.  The next amplifier, your FiiO E5, would only amplify the 2 channel stereo.

Well as long as I still get my DD5.1 I am sold. I bought the FiiO E5 last night and I just got an email that it has been shipped and estimate time of arrival on June 14th (10days)

I wish someone in here that has the Astro Mixamp would give there input in regards to lack of volume. Like I said it sounds good now but my AD700 and my PC350 just needs a ump.

As soon as I get it I will def. update this though.

***I just got my FiiO E5 today and I hooked it up to my Astro Mix Amp and all I have to say is OHH MY GOD. The issue I had with the Astro Mix Amp using my AD700 and PC350 was for my to hear my teammates I have to set the dial twatds voice chat meaning that the game volume lowers down a bit. with the E5 EVERYTHING is balance you can have the right sound to hear the low sound queues such us footsteps reloads across the map and clearly communicate with you team. Best $20 dollars I have spent.

NO distortions of any kind also if you feel like listen to music oif watching a movie with E5's bass boost WOW. That is all I have to say is WOW

Glad that this is working for you.  I currently have the game/voice dial set to about 2:30 and was wary of purchasing harder to drive headphones.

Thanks for the update.

As far as set up I have the mic hooked up to the Y adaptor and the I hooked up the FiiO to the Mixamp and hooked up the output of the FiiO to the headsets. I used the FiiO with my AD700 and my PC350 and my sound is delicious. It's nice to have extra volume.

Music and movies with FiiO bass boost, it really brings the shine out of these cans. Like I said you get NO hiss or distortion.

I recommend this product. I mean for 20 dollars you cannot go wrong.

Im buying one now LOL

Lol the Fiio e5 just adds volume and over emphasized, flabby bass. I guess some head-fi'ers like this. For $5 I guess it's worth it, but by no means impressive as far as sound QUALITY is concerned.

I hear you man I mean it's not a Grado Ra1 or Musical Fidelity V-can but for twenty bucks it's gives you that extra volume. My whole point in this post is really focus on gaming and gamers that are using the Astro Mixamp. I mean my AD700 and my PC350 are great cans in my opinion and just by adding another accessory for 20bucks is not bad at all. I just feel like the Astro Mixamp just doesn't drive my cans the way they were suppose to be. I am sure anyone hear that has an audiophile headphones that uses the mixamp would agree. Primary use with my Xbox360 the extra Ohmp for movies and music is just a bonus.

Nosaj03 please let us know how you feel about this and let us know how it is when you get your E5.

Not likely. A lot of distortions are not obvious (in the sense they don't sound like buzz or static or anything like that) but change FR nevertheless - like caps in the signal path of some amps, a lot of people actually like that distortion (aka warm frequency response).
