What kind of transport are you using to your dac?

Thread Starter

To all of you "transporters"...i just wondered how many of you use their computers (desktop/laptop) as digital transport and how many use cd/dvd players or such, also how many prefer to use DAP's digital out or any other kind of media reader like sqeezbox and such.

you can also specify the kind of digital connection you are using, such as optical, coax.usb or other.

I use my marantz CD5001 cd player's optical out.  at first,i tried using my desktop computer but i had serious playback issued with asio4all plugin that i wasn't able to resolve (nevermind...),and the sound was relatively harsh and sharp (a lot of treble) comparing to the cd player,so i just quit the whole "computer as transport" thing.

the nice thing about computer is that you can use digital EQ if you want.  I had a little fun EQing the HD650 with foobar for a while, and the whole track switching is much more easier and fast.  no need to switch cd's.

but as getting the best sound is my goal, I am using the marantz cd player which so far gives me the best results soundwise.  the cd player is much more quieter than the computer which is a benefits.

what about you?  what is your transport?

You got a Rosetta?  Which model, the 200 or 800?  What do you think of it?

And if you have the Rosetta, why bother using the Diverter?  Go direct with Firewire.

You just need the X-Firewire card:  http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/x-cards.php

I guarantee the sound will be better than going through a USB conversion.

Yep, I've had the Rosetta 200 for about 6 months. Bought it for my work rig, but I wasn't using it much, so I tried it with the home stereo. Overall it's sounds great and has been working out really well. I know about the firewire card option, but haven't pursued it because this is a temporary setup until my Sonicweld DAC comes in. Hopefully that will happen real soon!!

Any idea when the Decoder will make landfall?

Honestly, no. The project got delayed because the manufacturer had twins. He is also improving the USB input, so there has been a lot of computer code to write and update. That's all I can say at this point, except that I hope it's released very soon.

Is he changing it to Asynchronous?  That would be nice.
