I bought the Ultrasone HFI-650s not 6 months ago and they were quite literally the last (new) pair on Amazon. I get them and they work great for a week. Then I start getting this high pitched whine during all my music, that kind of follows the music tone up and down. I send an email to Ultrasone and they tell me that because not only are the 650s discontinued, but because I did not purchase them through an authorized retailer (as far as I can tell, you can't if you live in the states like me), that there is nothing they can do to help me.
After a little experimentation, I discover that it's just this one spot in the cable (not the connector) that is causing all the trouble, and if I bend the wire right at that point, the problem goes away - so I tie a nice knot, making sure that the only part bent at an extreme angle is the one malfunctioning section of cord. All this worked great - until this morning.
I noticed that the whine was back, do I play around again, and find another spot in the cable, only this time, it's right next to the connector and there is no way to tie that knot again.
I spent $150 on these and they have amazing sound (when the cord isn't screwing them up), and would rather not throw them away - I would like to instead replace the cable. The only issue is I cannot find any kind of comprehensive guide to replacing the cable for the HFI-650s - or even a guide that explains replacing a cord as more than: "cut the cord, figure out which wire goes where, solder the wires to the new connector and you're done". I knew that much. But how do I tell which wire is which? Is there anything in particular I should be aware about these headphones? should I use a specific type of wire? can I find everything I need at Radio Shack?
Thank you in advance,

**EDIT**oh, and sorry if I posted this in the wrong place - wasn't sure if I should post here or in DYI**
