Looking for new passive speakers

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting some new front speakers for my apt. Currently we just use my roommate's shitty Magnavox surround system but I want to replace the fronts with something decent. Although we mostly use the system for parties, I enjoy listening to music on it as well as watching movies.

I'm looking for something around $100 or less that has moderately good sound and bass, so that I don't have to completely suffer until I can listen to my own system.

I've been searching Craigslist and found a pair of Premier Acoustic 4.2 speakers for $60. Anybody know anything about these? They're pretty small, but will they be enough to fill our small living room without distorting?

A 1" Soft Dome Tweeter

8 Ohms

Sensitivity: 88dB???±3dB

Frequency Response: 65-20KHZ -Video Shielded

Wattage: 50- 175 Watts

Size: 13.78" x 5.28" x 5.28" H x D x W

Weight: 8 pounds

What else should I be looking into? I don't mind buying used since of course it leads to good deals. Thanks

On a strict 100$ budget for a pair, here are your options AFAIK

There is this Onkyo speaker at Accessories4less.com for less than 100 bucks and its not too shabby. D-N3XA

http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKDN3XA/Onkyo/DN-3XA-Two-Way-Bass-Reflex-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair/1.html

Then there are the legendary Insignia NSB-2111 from Bestbuy, they are very good sub 100$ speakers and can be made better with some minor mods as well.

Then there is the Sony SSB-3000 and SSB-1000, I personally think the SSB-1000 sounds better, dont have very high expectations but these can surprise you for their size.

For floorstanders, Newegg seems to have Polk floorstanders go on sale very frequently and you can pick up a pair between 100-200$ for some of their lower end speakers.

If you can pull up the budget to around 200, you can get some fairly good speakers like Wharfedale 9.0, PSB alpha Polk RTi4 and the likes.

another couple of suggestions sub 100$ - Eltax Monitor III or Tannoy F1 Customs

havent heard either of them, but people who has seem to like them

I was assuming the OP was in the US, the Tannoys are 250 odd $ in the US of A unless you have another source for 100$, in which case I'll probably pick it up myself just for kicks! :)

haha yes I am indeed in the USA. I really appreciate the suggestions and will be looking into the Insignia and Sony's soon. There seem to be lots of positive reviews about them.

I'm guessing it's not a good idea to place the Eltaxs' on carpeting since it has the down-firing port? The Sony's are probably looking best right now since they're big enough I don't "need" stands which would cost me another $30.

I saw them on line at £95, and assumed in the US would cost even less. usually in the UK we get the raw deal; not in this case, my bad.  250$ seems an overprice, and probably better speakers can be had for that amount.

still £95 + shipping to US even after conversion shouldn't amount more than $150

Parts Express Dayton B652. That is the best bang for the buck speaker going at $25 a pair. Yes they are decent quality. Yes they have enough grunt. You want a 6 1/2 woofer btw.

Try a pair of used Paradigm Atoms =]  Google up the reviews for atoms.
