Thoughts on Sennheiser mx 580?

Hey guys!

I just ordered a pair of Senn mx 580 from amazon. I read swbf2cheater's review where he raved about them but cant really find other reviews of these buds. Plus Swbf's music taste seems different, and i dont see how he really puts down the Yuin pk series when there seems to be agreement that they are very good. Im a student, penny squeezer, so I want to make sure I made a good purchase. Any thoughts would be appreciated! (I was initially going to buy the Yuin OK3 but the 580's were $30 cheaper).

It's not the greatest review (no comparisons to competitors), but here are some of my thoughts on the MX580.

Also, if you're worried about the volume controller affecting sound quality, I personally haven't noticed any degradation so far.

thanks! i was wondering why the other reviewer considered the volume control an advantage when others would rather not have it. i would rather not have it but im not too worried anymore haha. thanks again

To be honest, the volume control doesn't get in the way of things. I'm burning a pair in right now for use with a Sansa clip and have the EQ leaning towards the bass end. I've noticed that they are too sterile coming straight out of the ipod classic and the Ipod touch headphone jacks ( I'm used to using them with the UE triple-fi's which pack a punch ), so I've connected the MX 580's to a Fiio E1 line out amp to improve the bass when using them with the ipods. Hopefully, after a while, they'll burn in nicely. My initial impressions are they provide better clarity than the Yuin Pk3's, but since the PK3's have well over 150 hours on them, they are much tighter overall, but like I said the 580's still need some burn in time before I'll make a true comparison. Also had the PK-1's and found them just frustrating to drive for portable use without an amp as I always felt without the amp their potential was being under used. Which brings me to a question. How harder are the Mx880's and MX980's to drive in comparison to the 580's. They are all 16ohms, but various posts state that each are harder to drive than the MX580's with the 980's being the worst, but nowhere near as bad as the PK-1's. I've got a temptation to find out how much better the MX880's are over the 580's, but not if my clip requires 100% volume just to get the best out of them as right now I'm just thinking about the best earbuds for portable use without requiring an amp. So far the MX580s have made a good impression.

All i know is the volume control isnt much use for me especially with the channel imbalance and imho, its not a gradual decrease in volume. sound beats all the buds i've listened to (not many - mainly stocks and sony cheapies)

Well, I've a bit of a bias towards the yuin fanboyism.  I can name a few other earbuds that are near identical, sony even has one that looks just like the itec earbuds and sounds identical to the PK3, and is a bit cheaper but nobody is raving about those, only the pk3s for some reason.

The 580s can achieve things the pk3 can't.  I've got about 300+ hours on them now and they are just so spacious.  I've also got over 500+ on my Pk3s that Ive had for years and they do not sound anywhere near as wide or tall as the 580s, nor do they have a nice little rumble going on with good bass tracks.  Test out Dirty Diana by michael jackson with the 580 and the pk3 if anyone has that ability, and you'll see what i mean.

Edit:  Looking forward to your views on them :)

The 580 is the sweet spot in Senn bud line-up, IMO. The MX880 is not worth the extra $$$ since the price went back up, the volume control leaves some to be desired, and the sound being only slightly better.

Best SQ for the price though some might want to add bass to them. I'll stick with my MX471 for a little more bass amount since I have a couple radios that don't do bass boost.

They are so much cheaper and have a two year warranty which Yuin doesn't have, making them an even better deal.

Good luck with them.

I agree with you completely that the Mx580 is the jewel of the mx line.  The 880 is great, but you are correct that it is not worth the price of 80$ if the 580s are only 30$

However, as I've said before the 980s are worth every penny.  Great bass, amazing highs and mids, ability to GAME online with pinpoint accuracy.  My grip with them is their size, they are big.  But my kill to death ratio in Modern warfare 2 shot up dramatically since Ive had them! lol

im rocking a solid 20,000 to 15,000, finally got my FFA knife only nuke that i worked for months to get haha! :[ Not nearly as great as something like the AD700 or similar, but still good enough to pinpoint where sounds come from.  I couldnt be happier.

After a full 24 hours of burn in, I'm really liking these MX580's; more so than the PK-3's. Sennheiser have done a nice job with these inexpensive earbuds and swbf2cheater is right. They've got a PK-1 level of sound quality about them with less bass, but up there in terms of clarity. Nice pairing with the Sansa clip.

Best sound per dollar ratio out there.  very spacious sound, transparent.  Not the highest highs or lowest lows in the world.  But for headphones they are pretty good for the money.  I'm more of a home theater guy so my setup outshines these phones, but for on the go sound, they are fantastic.  No regrets in getting them.
