What exactly do LODs do for mp3 players

I never knew I could get one for a sansa fuze, people always said I should get one but I've not a clue what the hell they do or are meant for.

Bypass internal amplifier on portable players. Some players have an actual line out such as the T51/S;flo2 while others are semi line outs like the iPod docks. To get a true line out from an iPod you would have to iMod it.

But yea you hook them up to portable amps and you get a better sound; depending on how good your amp is anyway.

I've never heard of a "semi" line out. What's the difference between a dock's line out and hard modding your device?

It's not really called "semI' I was jsut trying to.... put it in simpler terms. You when you use a dock with any regular iPod/iPhone, you don't really bypass the internal amplifier. You get what I've always called, a "glorified headphone out". It is slightly cleaner and offers more power to use with a portable amp that will give you an overall better sound but it's a bit step up if you get an iMod.

iMod: Made by Redwine audio and they go inside the ipod and rewire it to directly give you a feed from the audio chips. There are other people who can explain this 10 times better but this is the general idea of it. Of course, iMods cost a little over 500 bucks so it's not cheap; or you can get someone else to mod your ipod for you or you can do it yourself and save a ton of money :)

Well, What about for a Sansa Fuze?  Would I need to mod that as well?  Which one of these LODs for the fuze would work best if i dont need to do anything else to it but purchase the lod and hook it up to my portable amp.

One has a min jack on the end and the other just has the female 3.5.  Does it make a difference?  Has anyone tried it?  I am leery of it because there is almost no information on it at all.  My concern is that the fuze is already damned powerful, I worry it would ruin the sound and that again I would need to do some other type of mod to the fuze just to get the lod to work.  I know nothing about them, sorry :[

No you don't need to Mod anything. And I wouldn't call the Fuze powerful.... I mean it can drive IEMs and some headphones but it's not powerful. And you would plug that cable into a portable amp. That way the sound could be regulated and adjusted to suitable listening volumes.

So there is no difference between the one with the cable and the one without?

Why would there be? Sure it's a removable cable so repeated connecting/disconnecting might yield some negative results after a couple of years of constant movement but it's not going to be a real problem.

because people spend a lot of money in search of a great quality cord and one of those LODs didnt have one, just the female 3.5mm end

I wasnt sure if it made a difference, seeing that the mini is directly attached to the adapter piece instead of plugged into a female end.

One is a mini 3.5 soldered directly to the adapter lod piece.  the other is a lod piece with a female 3.5 adapter.  I guess I was asking which would provide the best quality.  Direct 3.5 male solder vs soldered female adapter that you would then have to use another mini cable to plug into that.

Get the one with the 3.5 female.

That way you can switch around ICs to tweak the sound that you want by terminating multiple mini to mini ic.

ya i went with the female end one like you said,

i also bought a silver coated mini to mini DYI cable form a guy here on head fi, so it worked out well, shame i wont get all my new audio gear for aroudn 2 weeks though

i got the new ws70s coming from asia as well as this lod

I always love the feeling of coming home to see a box for me with something I ordered; sadly when I do order I have a tendency to not listen to music until the new piece of equipment arrives.

It's really funny you mention that, because I do the exact same thing. I think the reason I do it, is because I'm hoping that when the new piece of equipment arrvies, I'll be surprised with some sort of "wow factor" that I keep reading about people experiencing. lol.

^And that is exactly what I think too. I wonder "why listen now when it's just going to sound better in a couple of days?" But yea I'm getting a cable Wednesday for my phones so I'll see how that goes.
