High capacity and non proprietary

Thread Starter

I ordered the Zune HD 32gb before it came out and love it for the most part. But it is now full. I would just get the 64gb but I cannot stand the software. Not only does it tie me to windows, its using 800mb of ram right now and messes with my tags.

I hate apple products and the stigma that comes with them.

I need a high capacity player that will allow me to use any OS and to drag and drop files into it (I forget what its called mtp or something like it)

I have 45gb of mp3 but it grows constantly so im looking for 80gb+ I looked into the Archos but have found many of the reviews less than reassuring. Flac playback is not important to me unless it has 300gb or more.

So there is not much out there that I know of that can do these things. Am I stuck with a 5.5 gen iPod rockboxed with a bigger HDD? What other older PMP could I do this with. Im not looking for fancy stuff.

Thanks!

You're only bet is the 64gb Zen X-Fi2.  It has a microSD slot that "might" support another 32gb. I've got 16gb in mine right now.

With several thousand music files, you might also want to consider how to devide them into more manageable chunks.   I keep my seasonal music seperate from the rest for example.  I also have party playlists that I can swap to a player plugged into my deck speakers when called for. I rarely wish I had my entire music collection wth me.

There are ways to use an ipod without itunes, but I have no direct experience with any of them.  One of the new 240Gb (I think) ipod classics could work.  If capacity is your biggest concern, then a rockboxed ipod with the biggest hard drive that will fit would be your best bet since the if the 500GB Archos don't seem to have turned out too well.  If you don't go with that, anything with a (micro)SD slot could work if you can organize your music in card size chunks

For years I used Anapod Explorer for my iPod 30GB because I hated iTunes also. After that I switched to Media Monkey. Both worked well with my iPod. But last week, I bought an iPod Touch 64GB and decided to try iTunes again. It had been quite a while and wanted to see how much it had changed. I decided to be very objective and not jump on the "I hate Apple" bandwagon. It changed quite a bit, and I decided it's not so bad, not to mention how nicely it integrates with the Touch. I have my entire collection in lossless format, and average about 3 CD's per gig of storage. That means I have roughly 175 CD's on my Touch in lossless format.

Before you write off Apple or any other vendor for that matter, take an honest look at your needs and your motivations. Doing so may open options and opportunities you had ruled out for no good reason. On the other hand, it may also rule out some things you really want but that do not fit your personal needs. For example, I was looking at some killer cans because they had the best sound, but there are few places I could use open back cans due to sound leakage. I really wanted them, but had to evaluate my needs.

Good luck.
