Choosing Camera Help Please!

Hey Head-fiers,

Since many of you seem to dwell in both the audio world and photography world, I'd like some help on recommending a camera for a close friend's birthday. So really, any recommendations are greatly appreciated! In any case, the only requirements I know of is that it has to be a digital camera, it has to have great image quality (in standard modes without adjustment), and have various effects.

Her birthday is on June 2nd, so I'd really like as many options as possible. Thanks so much!

budget?

Sounds like a point and shooter is what you want.

You probably need to be more specific in order for others to chip in ideas. What budget? What size? etc

No real budget, she's just looking for a high-quality, simple digital camera.

Unfortunately, that's all she told me. I'll ask her for more specifics next time I see her. Thanks for the interest!

Of course if she wants to shoot home video, she should go with a dedicated camera:

(same camera used to film Avatar)

Although I am a dedicated Nikon user in the world of SLRs, for a point and shoot camera I would recommend either a Canon Powershot (there's a very wide range of them to suit different needs) or, for a higher price but somewhat classier and with a little better quality, a high end Leica, such as a V-Lux 20.

The Canon will cost somewhere between $200 and $400, whereas the Leica will run you closer to $700. Depending slightly on where you get each one from.

It's hard to beat a Canon point-and-shoot.  You shouldn't have to spend more than $200 to get something nice.  Look at the Powershot SDxxx series.

I would go for a Canon as suggested. I picked up Powershots for my wife and mom. Of course for myself, I picked up a T1i and extra lenses :) (slowly getting into the hobby).

My mom isn't technologically savy but the Powershot is simple enough to use...course my dad has to transfer the pictures for her to the laptop hehe.

It really depends what you're looking for, I've been through a few cameras, brand wise I would suggest:

Point & shoot - Sony

Budget DSLR - Nikon

Professional DSLR - Canon

In short I've found the Sony P&S cameras to give you the best bang for your buck. DSLR wise I like the Canon L lenses and the D-range (10D-50D) cameras, I've broken 2 XT (300D & 350D) cameras from normal use and find the Nikon offerings (D5000, D90) to be much better built.

X2 on Canon point and shooters. Panasonics are also ok.

Thanks guys! She bought a Canon point and shoot. I forget the specific model, but it was based off of your recommendations.
