ipod refurbs from ecost

I just bought a refurbished 4th gen ipod from ecost.com with the intention of going down the imod route (as soon as my bank account recharges ).  I received the unit pretty quickly and when I opened the box, it came with pretty much everything I was expecting.  However, when I turned the ipod over to look at the back all I saw was a plain mirror...there was no apple engraved nor lettering of any kind!

Now some people may prefer this look, but I suddenly had a sinking feeling that I was swindled somehow.   I have yet to put the unit through it's paces to see if it even works like an ipod (still charging the battery at this point) so I'm still holding out hope.

Is it common practice for the back plates of refurb ipods to be replaced with generics?  Anyone have any idea who does the refurbishing for ecost (or do they do it themselves)?  I'm wondering what other parts were replaced...  I don't have any electronics fixing experience, so I don't really want to open up the unit to find out what's in there.

(When I did a search on the forum for ecost, the threads only deepened my fears.  I'm hoping someone has had good mileage with a similar ecost refurb to put my fears to rest.)

It seems I jumped the gun a bit.   Upon closer inspection, the back of the unit does have the apple logo embossed, but not frosted like my other ipod and so faint that I couldn't see it with the protective plastic wrap around it.  I'm just starting to use it, but everything seems to be in order so far.  I think I can breathe now...

If it is a refurbished unit it may have a new back. Does it have a serial number engraved on the back?

you cant get original new 4G backs, so when refurbed they probably bought an OEM back panel.

It does have a serial number on the back, but the number doesn't match the one in the "About" section if the software.  So I guess they did replace it with one from another unit.

I tested it a bit and it seems to be working fine, so I'm going to assume it's a legitimate unit for now.  I don't mind if it's a frankenstein since I'm planning on modding it anyway, as long as the insides are real.
