Beyerdynamic DT 770 / 880 / 990 250ohms + Hifiman EF2a : a nice deal ?

Hi folks,

I have a Hifiman EF2a amp and I am searching for a good and comfortably headphone. I bought for use with my ATH-AD700 and I think the pair does not marriage well.

Has anybody experienced any Beyerdynamics 250 ohms versions with this amplifier ? Does the amp have power enough ? My musical taste are classic rock and jazz. What Beyer headphone would better fit this kind of music ?

Best regards and thanks for any help.

Marcelo

I'd also be interested in this as I just bought a DT990/250 and EF2 on a whim. Thanks!

I have the DT-880 250 ohm and the EF-5, which is a more powerful version of the EF-2 without the DAC section. These two are not a good match at all, in my opinion. Nor should they be, since the EF-5 is designed to drive low impedence headphones. With the EF-5, the DT-880's bass is not well controlled, and the treble is way too prominent.

i have the ef2a, and had the beyer dt880/250 ohm.

not a good combo, in my opinion.

the ef2a just doesn't have enough power to clear up the bass and lower mids.  sounded congested to me.

however, i just can't get over what the ef2a does to grado headphones.  just a simple sr125i with ef2a is stellar, and sr225 even better.

just my .02

i also tried akg k141 and k171 with the ef2a, and liked both.  i guess it's the lower impedence...

I think Grado a bit uncomfortably for long listening, and offers limited soundstage.

Do you know if Beyer's 880 and 990 low impedance version (32 ohms) is more easy to power up from Hifiman EF2a ??? Does the SQ much different compared with the standard 250 ohms ?

I also found K601, which is open-back and has impedance of 120 ohms. It seems to be great as K701, but I did not found any comments with this and EF2a . Has anybody tried this combo ?

Another favorable choose seems to be Audio-Technica AD900. For those that have tried, what can I expect from bass and mids ? Does AD900 sound less bright and more natural compared with his brother AD700 ?

Thanks a lot !

AD900s have better bass punch than AD700s, and are pretty much a big brother to the 700s in just about every other regard.

The 990s I have really need a lot of juice to come up to speed. Great phones when they do get going though.

It would be nice to know about EF2a with DT770 Pro 80Ω. Did you already have tried this pair ?

If Beyers are hard to drive with EF2a, what about Sennheiser HD 600 ? In the long EF2 topic by HeadphoneAddict, some tells that is a goody matching, but it still did not convinced me, since Sennheiser has 300 ohms and I am worrying to buy and underpowering it. I also would like to know if EF2a + HD600 will not produce hiss since I think I will need to push the volume know almost to max if I want to power this cans well...

I know I am on the wrong way trying to choose a headphone after the amp. Just because I bought EF2a two mounths ago thinking that tube sound will improve my AD700 signature, but I did not like the result very much.

Thanks a lot!

I just got my EF2 and it's a very good match with Denons. I also tried it out on my Beyerdynamic DT770/80 but the bass was WAY too much for my liking (I think it actually increased) and detracted from the rest of the spectrum. Of  course I've only been able to use it for about 30-40 minutes so these are just initial impressions so I may edit later if things change.
