Cmoy amp, non Altoids suggestions as to what to put it in.

I have a Cmoy on order to make my first amp. I do not want to put it in an Altoids tin, I would like something different. Any suggestions?

If you stick it in a block of wood you will have a Grado RA1...

What sort of case are you thinking of..?

Several manufactures make nice little cases.

Or were you thinking of something like the Altoids tin only different?

I am open to a metal tin like the Altoids, but a nice wooden box of a similar size or I have seen translucent plastic boxes would be my preference. It would be easier for me to drill into wood or plastic.

EDIT - what are the dimensions of an Altoids tin? Thanks.

Go to some place they sell Cigars and look at a Humador.

How about a box for a pen and pencil set?

Someone else will have to say how big an Altoids tin is, I have

never used one. Mine are all in small, plastic, instrumentation boxes.

Serpac and Hammond have nice ones.

Hammond and Lansing have nice metal cases

I've seen people put then in small tackle boxes.

I've even seen them built as a kind of "free form" art.

Your imagination is really the limit.

Good Luck!

Prog Rock Man:  Have you looked at M&S's Altoid knock-offs?  Tin is exactly the same size, but no embossing.

You can put it in just about anything. Mine was in a penguin mints tin, I've seen them in generic tins, gutted electronics products, tiny DIY cases. just about anything.

Agree with you about Maplins, I re-cased my CmoyBB in one of the cases I got from there.  It's only slightly larger than the altoids tin and there is a slight recess on the top, I've put small rubber pads on the top which I also got from Maplins to stop my iPod classic sliding about.

I'll take some pics of it later.

Look forward to that. Is there a heat issue putting the Cmoy in such an enclosure?

I've never even thought to check, but tbh I'd imagine it wouldn't even create that much heat.

If you do use this box, there are a few things to note:
1:  For the PCB to fit snugly, you will need to remove a small corner of the board, it's only part of the ground plane, so it's not too bad.

2:  There are inner screw mounts on the bottom part, these will need to be removed.  Don't remove the outer ones as they're for the case itself.

3:  I cheated with the hole for the LED, I just drilled a small-ish hole in line with the LED attached to the board.  It's quite effective actually, you still get blinded by the bloody thing, lol

4:  You'll notice there is a ribbon in the box, this is to make battery removal easier.  With the sponge in there to stop the battery from moving about you NEED that ribbon.

5:  For strain relief on the battery cable, I've tucked the wires around the outside one of the screw posts.  Pretty effective too.

6:  I used a slide switch for the Bass Boost as they're quite hard to toggle accidentally, to stop it protruding too much I've used some washers to move it further inside the box.

As you can see it's pretty compact and not that much bigger than an altoids tin.
