worth the upgrade from a NuForce HDP?

currently have a nuforce HDP, but I'm looking to maybe get rid of it and instead get a DACMagic and Audio-GD C-2C.

 

Is that a step up or down? I've never listened to a dac magic and/or c-2c, so i was hoping someone who has could weigh in their opinion. The HDP is decent, but I can't help but wonder if part of it is hype/flavor of the month kind of thing.

... you want to upgrade from a DAC to another DAC or a amp? Ummm.... 

 

Oh, wait, you want both. But wouldn't it be better to get a Audio GD DAC with a ACSS connection to a C2?

From reading this forum I undersdand the dac section of the HDP is actually its forte so getting a better amp might make sense. What phone are you using?

Both will probably scale up nicely with a better amp. I don't know for how long you had your HDP but if  I was you I 'll enjoy it until you get around 600 hours on it. If still dissatisfied I will look into a nicer amp. Just a note of warning. Those days, the gap in quality between mid-fi and high-end is closing in rapidly. (which is good for those who are not ready to throw thousands on gear). So don't expect night and day differences.

Having heard both HDP and the DACmagic, I'd say that would be at best a sidegrade, and possibly even a downgrade pending on how you like the sound.  HDP is more detailed and clear while DACmagic have a slightly better low end and soundstage.  In any case I feel that the difference isn't great enough to warrant a move from one to another.

 

As for the amp, C-2C would probably be an upgrade of the HDP's amp section, which I was never impressed with. I even preferred the lower-tier Compass' amp to the HDP's, thus I would think that C-2C would bring about even a greater difference.

 

So I would probably keep the HDP as a DAC/emergency amp and look for a better amp to go with it.

I'm considering upgrading the amp on my hdp for my lcd-2/hd650/701's.  I'm curious everyone keeps saying they don't like the amp on the HDP. I'm curious as to why? It drives these 300ohm hd650's pretty handedly.

I hardly read any dislikes of the HDP's amp, where did you read that? It's comparable to the M-Stage and Asgard

All I have to say is that the HDP's amplifier section is better than you might think in terms of sound quality, some phones such as the K701 or DT770/880/990 600 ohms may benefit from using a M-Stage because it's very capable power wise.
