Those knobs are the weak link of the RA150 for sure, and the main reason to never buy a pre-owned unit no matter how tempting (the other being that the amp is quite affordable brand new).

Having said that I don't use them, as I have a balanced tube preamp in line with it so I just leave the volume of the RA150 set at 1pm or whatever, and control the output with the preamp. They are an economical way for Alesis to keep crosstalk to a minimum on an integrated balanced/dual mono speaker amp, but I have fantasized about bypassing them (essentially converting the RA150 to a pure power amp) more than once since I installed the preamp.

So in answer to your question... yes, they can be a bit annoying if you are using them as your main attenuation controls but it's not that hard to get used to them.

You'll get used to it (or just set to max and use a preamp).

The Ra 150 is really cheap, quite a few on ebay. Always tempted to try one, but £40 shipping + return always put me off bigsmile_face.gif. Another popular amp among studio gears is the Crest CA6 (power amp).

Nope, never have. The higher-wattage pro audio amps (which are much more ubiquitous now) are made more for public address use. These amps have much more wattage than the RA150, which is made for a different purpose (near field monitoring). The reason that there aren't many low wattage pro audio amps out there any more is because the general trend nowadays is to use a powered monitor for near field use.

The RA150 harkens from when the JBL Control 1's ruled the day, along with other passive monitors from the likes of Tannoy and others. For this purpose it's the quality and accuracy of the amplification, not the wattage that counts. The RA150 is a bargain largely because it reigned supreme back then, which has allowed it to survive unchanged through today and also keeps the cost of manufacture way down.

I've been looking into picking up an OCC balanced HE-6 headphone cable.  From reading these threads there appear to be two versions.  The v1 with heatshrink connectors and the v2 with molded. However, I have read several members noting that both versions of the cable began to oxidize relatively quickly.  Is this normal in OCC cables and usually hidden by sheathing?  Are these cables considered a bad investment?  Does the oxidization affect sound quality?  I wasn't able to find straight forward answers through some searching.  Any information would be helpful in my decision, thanks.

Oxidation is just cosmetic. I personally have no issues with it but others do. I think what most people do if they are into cables is buy an aftermarket cable and then sell the stock.

I still have the V2 stock cable (molded with no shrink). The previous owner use it as barewire to tie to speaker post; I'm keeping it for the same thing with vintage stuff. No oxidation yet. To be precise, the only oxidiation I saw from cables, was from the Toxic cable thread where Frank put up picture of a fake cable. OCC copper cable from my experience only grew darker after long use.

From my memory, my very first stereo setup (~15 years ago) also used copper cables in teflon (sure as hell isn't OCC =p), tied barewire at the binding post too with, after all those years they're only darker, with lots of dust. And that was a tropical country with high humidity.
