HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone - Page 158

We just had a meet for the member in the Detroit metro area. I took most of my stuff and my personal goal was to listen to the HE-6 with my WA5-LE.

I was able to compare the LCD-2 and the HE-6 in my system. The HE-6 blew away IMO the CLD-2. I was so impressed with them that I just got home from the meet and ordered a pair before the introductory promotion would end.

As you all know they are 50 ohms so in theory I shoal deb using the low impedance output in my WA5-LE. In that way they sounded good at low volume but to achieve the level I normally listen I was needing to go about or just past 12 o'clock and I could dear some distortion. Just for the heck of it I tried them in the high impedance out put (this is where the HD800 and T1 are connected) and viola! incredible sound and the volume know between 9 and 10 for the volume I look.

Everybody including the owner though they sounded incredible out of the Woo.

Any distortion at 12:00 is not coming from your Woo using low imp, maybe tubes or DAC/source player. Check out the gain from your source player/DAC. I have had my Woo at 2:00 and still no distortion.

That said I did hear a little distortion in the lows and highs when I first got my HE6's. After about 80 hours on my HE6s I found the distortion was coming from my Realiser when I went below a gain of -15 but I have corrected that with the addition of my ADG19 DSPv5 and not loosing any AQ. Now I can use my Realiser at gain of 0 with NP, there by lowering the volume level of my Woo. I should add that the distortion was not there with music but only with movies.

Anyway I now only use my HE6's.

Stupid place. (in Homer Simpson's voice. I was going to say I am not any smarter than him but then realized he makes good money from his long run on the Simpson's, so he isn't as dumb as he acts)

I am glad the person that I live with and travel with doesn't read anything here. I would never hear the end of it from her. 

I ordered a pair while on special as today is the last day. They better be good! :^)

No, I don't know what I am going to power them with yet. The 71B and the PB2 for now but most likely as Ron is crazy about the Virtue 2.2, that will be up soon. Gahhh

There is a "P" version coming out, less expensive ($900 ) and can be powered by portables like a Tomahawk

No worries, I'm sure if driving properly the HE6 will sound better than HE6p. As it happens to all other brand, for example 32 ohm 880s are no match for the 600 ohm, and the better the source is the better the T1s get over the T5ps. There is generally a price to pay when making the same headphone easier to drive. And the headdirect would not replace their own flagship so quickly again, hopfully.

Thanks! The Virtue amps are truly amazing for their price. And that build quality is simply marvelous. I can't wait till I get my tube buffer + battery power supply.

This is the best I've ever heard my music. JH13s are the next best in line, but don't have the separation, clarity and layers that this setup does.

 

When buying the HE-6s I was a bit worried about their bass, and so I put on a few of my favourite hip-hop songs. The heart-thumping club-like bass is definitely there, but interestingly when the other frequencies comes on, they take center stage. I think Skylab is definitely right- these are not bass-shy, and it may be impossible to get more bass without tuning back the mids/highs.

 

I'm now wondering whether to convert my TWAG terminations to run with this... Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Yes, Ron mentioned that to me. I read what little there is about it and it does look promising and in my situation, would be a better choice but . . . I couldn't get a hold of Homer to get his input. I guess he is on the set. 
 

If you are looking at amps to power the lovely HE6 cans then you should have a look at the Schiit Lyr before splashing the cash.  I put my name down for pre-order as it delivers serious power into a headphone output.  Great value, cool design, hybrid and really great customer service response.  The first batch of Lyrs is due to ship 1 March.  Cant wait.  Sure you may be able to get better but at the price it is a steal.  Even at double the price I would still short list it.

For an amp that hasn't hit the streets, it sure does have a following.

I did look at it. As well as the EF6's. But unlike you, for me "cant wait" meant... Can't wait. I wasn't going to wait a couple of months for products that aren't out yet, and leave my HE6s sitting around underpowered.

Besides, the Virtue Two.2 is the same price, available now, and also has awesome customer service response- the owner added me on G-Chat to answer my questions, although I was getting my amp through a distributor and not directly through him. I started out looking at the Two.2, got so impressed by the company that I eventually bought their higher priced offering (Sensation) instead. Sonically though the Two.2 is identical.

Now, back to the music :)

It took the HE-6 5 days to get to my doorstep, and that's including the weekend. 

The HE-5 took only 3 days last year. Shipping/tracking is definitely one of their strong suits.

Is there an ETA for the EF6 amp?
