HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone - Page 916

After doing several comparisons of DAC against the ODAC/O2, I just realized ODAC/O2 is rediculously accurate.  Now I see why I kept saying I'm hearing so much details.  My amp was sourced from ODAC.

No, it's not a $1k or $2k DAC.  It's just an accurate one. Although it's cheap as hell, regardless of price, it will whoop some ass.

Finally got around to trying the HM5 earpads, and although this is still very early on (I'm on my second song thus far), I am EXTREMELY pleased with the impact it's had on the sound!! I spent a couple hours listening to my previous favorites, the HFM velours, and this made the top end finally open up enough without being odd or overbearing, and the bass has gained in punch and impact... With all the obvious provisos that go along with being this early on in the listening process, I'd have to say that these are my favorite pads by a pretty wide margin thus far.

Only potential issue is I believe my left ear is touching the driver, which might get fatiguing after a while... Here's hoping that's not the case!

Good thing that I have a brand new pair just laying around doing nothing. I'll give them a try as well as the shire 1540.

Are the IGBTs replaceable if they fail?

That's why I like tube amps. They still make 6550s and KT88s.

Technically yes but they are not easy to find. Fortunately there is a very good resource in Jon Soderberg who service and repairs Threshold and Forte amps. I think he has some in stock. I have own this T50 and a pair of T400 and never had a single problem. According to Jon they are very reliable and unlikely to fail.

This is a heck of an amp for the He-6 and the only reason I ma selling it is because I bought the new McIntosh MHA100 as all in one amplifier. I am even thinking on selling by jacked up Woo WA5-LE too because the MHA100 works great with all dynamic and electromagnetic headphones I have.

Do you hook the HE-6 up to the speaker post in the back or do you use the HP?  Talking about the MHA100?  I also wonder how it sounds with the HD800.

They are hooked directly to the binding post at the back of the amplifier. It will provide about 8 watts at 50 ohms so it is safe and actually work perfect that way.

If you are asking how the HD800 sounds with the MHA100 the answer is that IMO the sound the best i have ever listened to them. Even better IMO that with my WA5-LE which really makes them sing....:D

I'm guessing you plug the HD800s in the HP out - correct?

Yes, I am an using the High Impedance/ Normal output setting. No need for the High Output setting at all it has more than enough power at the normal output.

This is interesting. I'm also looking to replace the WA5 with something better / cheaper....

May I ask what tubes you are using with the WA5?

For long time I have been using EML 300B Mesh for power, USAF 596 as rectifiers and Tungsol BG/RP 6F8G drivers .Sometimes I change the drivers to Sylvania 6SN7WGT short bottle brown base, chrome top.

I'm a new member of this exclusive little club now for 35 minutes...........bought a very close to new pair and received today. Had to wait to unbox these beauties till my daughter and I watched the DVR'd US soccer game with Ghana (epic final few minutes!).

Anyway, I've listened for 37 minutes now out of my Pioneer Spec system and cannot believe how good these sound! I may not sleep tonight. The bass is EPIC and so heavy (only word I can think of that fits). Unreal. I am so glad I got them. This out of the headphone out by the way.

Also bought the HiFiMan speaker tap box so that will be yet another revelation I'm sure.

Thank you all for singing the praises of these. If anything you undersold them.

Wow.
