These match with my impressions. I had a Lyr on loan for a while and didn't like it with my HE-6, but thought it was a good match for the Audeze.

That said, there's a Lyr 2 out now. Might be a different ballgame...

I paid less than that for my SX500 monoblocks... Just looked them up, and although they don't list as many specifications for the mAMPs as they do the SX500s, I'm not sure I have the technical knowledge to determine what would be better for the HE-6. Comparing the two briefly:

  • Distortion at 8ohm/10W seems marginally higher on the SX500;
  • Gain is a bit lower on SX500 (27db vs 30db);
  • Max current is higher on SX500 (35A vs 30A);
  • Dynamic range is a bit better on the SX500 (115db vs 111db);
  • Output power increases much more on the SX500 vs the mAMP as impedance drops, which I believe indicates a more robust power supply in the SX500 (correct me if I'm mistaken).

There's more info comparing the two, but I'm not remotely well-versed in electronics enough to know what they mean. It appears to me (again, I'm very interested in learning more here if what I'm saying is wrong, so please correct me) that the SX500 would be a better fit for the HE-6 due to the lower gain,  higher current, better dynamic range, and (presumably) better power supply. The mAMP seems to have the edge in slightly lower distortion and a smaller physical footprint-- although the SX500 isn't particularly large, and is light enough to carry both amps at once very easily.

Thoughts, guys?

Edit: tried to paste images of the two spec sheets, had difficulties, cursed, and gave up. 'Murica.

Thanks Theogenes.  How do the SX500s sound with the HE-6?

Totally reasonable question... But I've actually not tried it out yet redface.gif. They are currently powering my ATC monitors and I've been too lazy to swap them around. If/when I do, though, I'll definitely post my impressions!

So I just got a new HE-6 but haven't taken it out of the box yet or listened to it. I am not sure I want to spend the money on the amp needed to drive this headphone well.

However, I just found out about the Emotiva mini-x a-100 which is selling at Amazon for $219. Can this amp really drive the HE-6 well? Does it sound good from this amp?

I personally think Schiit products are overrated...just my opinion (commenting in regards to the last few pages of posts and the disappointment with the Lyr).

Well, I like my mini-X/ HE-6 combination. I'm going stick with this for a while. The noise floor is low, separation is good and the bass has a good snap. I'm using the Yulong DA-8 DAC. Let us know what was included in the box of your HE-6's. Mine didn't even have a scrap of paper saying "Welcome to the Hifiman Club", or a warranty statement. I found that a little odd. I think Hifiman is missing a branding opportunity there.

I have a Crest CA-2 Power amp I'm bought on a whim to see how well it powers the HE-6. I think it does a pretty good job especially for the price I paid. It's in horrid cosmetic condition but works fine. Someone take it off my hands. Price isn't much more than a new Mini-x.

If the incoming nfb 28 balanced out doesn't cut it that's def next. I've been looking around non stop for an ideal affordable solution that functions as a dac as well.

I don't think mine does either. I'll let you know once I look.

Wow, that product looks pretty amazing, especially for the price.
