ohhgourami  your Krell 400xi is a integrated which does not have a pre-in (from the pics that I saw), so you cannot by-pass the internal pre-amp of the Krell. That means you are using the Master 1 & Krell Pre-amp, both together ?

The 400xi has a mode to bypass the pre to work as a power amp so I can use the Master-1 with it.

Oh man I wish!

Well some updates on my journey with HE 6. I has previously tried HE 6 in the following 2 configurations :

NFB 7 DAC ----Cayin A70 tube Integrated (using the Cayin volume control)

NFB 7 DAC ----Master 1 Pre-----Direct to power amp section of Cayin A70 tube Integrated

I found the Master 1 to be bit better hence ended up using the second configuration. A bit more clarity & dynamic. The Cayin pre-amp section had current production Electro Harmonix tubes. I decided to roll in some NOS tubes, pair of Telefunken 12 AX7 & Pair of Phillips Miniwatt 12AU7. Have been listening with them for last couple of days. Well.... Master 1 has been relegated back to speaker pre-amp duty.

Sound stage width & depth (which was already nice after i rolled in NOS Svetlana KT 88 power's + open grill modd) went up a notch. But the most effect was on the highs & clarity. Highs are more extended, Micro details are more clearer. Before this HD 800 was my fav HP by a slight margin (bcos of their slightly better micro detail resolving trait) but now its a tie. If I had to live with only only, I will have to toss a coin to choose. & the funny thing is Bass seems better , Quantity is the same but it sounds / feels better.

What is this magic that NOS tubes have that current production cannot seem to replicate ?

My KAV-400xi will probably go up for sale in 1-2 weeks.

YES - that's what I'm talking about.   Congrats on the new amp.   Overkill is the only way to go...

I'm now looking at a custom made Odyssey Kismet to replace the F1J.

Their new Kismet reference stereo or the mono version?  Guess you're not going for their tube-preamp integrated :D

No info on pricing for the new model, looks like it'll be north of 5k though, certainly if you customise it.  I can't seem to find definite tech. specs but it looks like they're emphasising low gain, massive current reserve  what do you hope to find vs your F1-J?

Taking my flight back to Europe tonight, come sunday I'll get to try the headphone out of my vintage SX-1980 receiver (about 20 WPC into 50 Ohm, via the headphone out)  AND my Germany-bought F5 for the first time...feels like christmas.

I just borrowed a Taurus Pre and Merak monoblocks to run my HE-6 off for the NZ headphone meet tomorrow, will post thoughts when I have more time with them!

Ha ha ha..  No not the tube preamp, I already have a tube DAC so I don't want to go overboard with tubes..  I'm looking at the Kismet Stereo, much cheaper than the monos..

The stereo should not be north of 5K.  Price negotiations with Klus is going on now.  Yeah, that why I'm looking at it because of the low gain and high current output.  That's if what he's saying is true.  All the review seem to think so thus far.

Vs. the F1J?  Just something different.  The F1J is most deff. End Game.  If that's your thing.  Craig pointed this out to me.  I nearly flipped my lid.

Still a little to much, but If I sell the F1J and the be without an amp for a while - maybe so.  At least I know what that bad boy sounds like.

If anyone is looking for a real "END GAME" amp for the HE-6 that MOON 6001 is it without a doubt.  That's a good deal as well.  Better get it before I do.

Testing all my new toys that arrived in Europe while I was in India, too early for definite impressions but I'll say one thing:  the approx. 20 W that my vintage Pioneer SX-1980's headphone output delivers into the HE-6's 50 Ohm is certainly enough to drive 'm well :gs1000smile:  And it sounds VERY nice indeed.  Speaker outs are 270 WPC into 8 Ohm but why bother when the headphone out is ample?

Next up:  the F5.

Wow, that Pioneer looks really COOL. Please do try the open grill mod.
