No idea, personally. The descriptions of other Krell amps haven't sounded laid back at all, but this one might be different.

They do. But they are very stable at very low impedance. They don't sound exciting.

Interesting, that sounds different than I had imagined. I'll cede to your greater knowledge on the matter, though.

Speaker tube amps with Tung Sol 6550s, in P-P is the ticket. The Russians or Chinese 6550s just don't cut it.

Thus far, I've tended to be a SS guy myself. Heard some decent tube setups, nothing as grandiose as yours, unfortunately. Don't doubt that your setup sounds great though!

I've not yet heard the HE-6 leashed to another tube amp setup. But I am pleased with my own Tube/HiFiMAN pairing and have a vintage SS receiver to compare it to.

The best tube amp is still the Audio Research but the tubes make a difference, the Tung Sol 6550s are the best followed by the GE 6550s, US made.

SS amps tend to be unengaging, disconnect. But tube amps...

Engaging is the word I'd choose for my tube monaural amps.

I hear people say that, but I've found my Hilo > Master 8 > F5 clone to be remarkably engaging and personal while still providing me the levels of detail and clarity that I crave. I've had very little chance to listen to tube amps, and I've heard some I liked, but thus far I've found the best overall clarity and transparency from SS. Again, not claiming my experience to be encyclopedic, just offering a different experience. I would absolutely LOVE to hear the HE-6 from something like the AR amps you have... Would definitely allow my mind to be changed if they're that good ;).

According to you perhaps...For me there's no such thing as 'the best', depends on what you're looking for in the sound reproduction.  A 300B will sound different from a 2A3, will sound different from a 221 etc etc.  And then there's endless amp topology variations.  No offfense but to me a statement like 'the best' tube amp is akin to saying that strawberry is the best ice cream flavour for everyone.

Tubes that cost so much that makes them unatainable, like WE300B, perhaps some Sophias. So what's the point?

Indians are very value conscious that way. dt880smile.png
As a fellow Indian, I reject that inbred value consciousness after joining Head-fi. It's now a customised amp for a HP 😜

LOL :D  Right-o!  And what's the price of that Audio-research amp you were mentioning?  I can get you 2A3 for 40 EUR/tube (a decent one, I add), Electro-Harmonics 300B for 65 EUR/tube.  And there's guys on this site who can build you a budget amp with them for about 600 USD, 2500 for a TOTL config with Lundahl transformers.

My point is that it makes no sense talking about 1 single system that's supposed to be 'the' best, certainly not with tubes.

Darryl - you've heard their gear before, right? how do you like their DACs?

I'm sure its good but they look like they're skimping on parts going with the es9016, I don't really know schiit though so maybe they h ave good reason to use it instead of the 9018. Latest issue of tone audio has a review, but no comparison with other dacs.
