HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone - Page 895

Just got my new grills from musicinmymind today!

The upgrade is significant! Even I didn't expect such a big difference considering I already had the cotton stuffing removed. I can't go back as the stock grills made the HE-6 seem congested. Can't imagine calling the HE-6 congested until now.

does it take the compressed sounding out and create a wider imaging?  Making the imaging of the sound coming from left or right more dimentional?  I hope you know what I mean.

Yes, very much so. I know exactly what you mean and uncompresses it. Take off the grills and you will know what I mean.

I was too busy with the felt mod at the time when I took off the grills to check the difference with them on and off. I only noticed the changes in removing the cotton at the time. I wish I did this sooner though!

I finished my grill mod as well.

Wire mesh grills from a Staples waste paper basket and fine perforated nylon cloth underneath to keep the dust out.

I have to agree this does open up the sound-stage noticeably.

I should really head to bed, but I don't want to take these cans off! First world problems!

The mids seem to have a lot more focus with these grills. It's been something I've wanted for awhile.

I know the feeling, except that it's afternoon here now.  But as I sleep very little sitting in my office working from 3:30 AM on while listening to music and taking a break at dawn to watch the sun rise with a  strong coffee and a cigarette (quit a month back) is part of my routine.

Does the hardwiring improve anything?

I am surprised that you two HE-6 Supremus are so late to the Open Grill mod party. Better late then never :beerchug:

Best explanation I've heard yet. FWIW, here's a pic of my HE-6 which I received in Jan, 2011.

Their impedance measures at 49.25 ohms on my cheap meter.

Not necessarily. I wider soundstage could be closer, putting the instruments/musicians at greater angles to the sides.

So has anybody having done these mods compared them to the 800s for presentation?

+1 and also 009

I say it's a tossup between the HD800. Really no surprises on the comparison though... The Senn has better staging and imaging and overall microdetail, while i feel the HE-6 has better midrange presence and much more body in the low end.

The HD800 is pickier with amping though, moreso than the HE-6. The HD800 can change character depending on the amp used; the HE-6 scales up but more or less retains it's character.
