It sounds ok on the Meier, pretty listenable, highs are smooth, bass has reasonable presence (quite neutral bass), but doesn't sound like a TOTL HP.

Plugged it into WA22 just for kicks, Wow. Didn't expect this ! Bass has a solid 3D thump, Soundstage increased, highs are more air, extension. NOW it sounds like a TOTL HP. I am using an Audio GD NFB 7 dac (balanced) with WE 422A +TS 5998 + TS 6SN7 & the general consensus is  a good Speaker amp will further improve sound. Hehehe... :veryevil: Can't wait.

Edit:

Forgot to add...I listen to 70% EDM & 30% Rock (some pop/vocal). I started listening to HE 6 + WA22 with some EDM , then at 11.45 pm I made the mistake of switching to Rock / Vocal music just to test couple of tracks  & the plan was to retire to bed by 12. I queued in "On Every Street" , I had goose bumps after 2 mins, Mark Knopfler's voice never sounded like this before. So started queueing in all my fav vocalists - Nora Jones, Dido, Annie Lenox, Otis Redding, Don Henely , Texas etc. This is the best HP I have heard for vocals, so natural, intimate.... I went to bed with bloodshot eyes at 1.30 pm but with a happy grin on my face.

THIS GUY GETS IT! :beerchug:

So many have tried to convince themselves a headphone amp was sufficient, but have failed to reach enlightenment.

No not yet., waiting for the speaker amp connector Robinette box. But I am already lovin these off my Wa22 , which I know (from the feedback on this thread) is still not reaching the full potential of the HE 6. So the only way to go is UP. :L3000:

Not really. There is worse for sure as the wa22 is a fine amp
Just not enough power to drive them well

Agree with you  Al. They will run out of steam with the wa22 especially on classical recordings. The Classic play them but same story there. Now the WA5  is a good match for them.

I thought about trying to read through almost 1000 posts but I just need to know one thing. Is the Lyr a good match for these phones or is a full-on speaker amp the only way to go.

I've not tried the Lyr, but I'm still in the speaker amp camp. The vintage receiver route is pretty good as well. I just saw an SX-650 on my local CL for $150.

They ran out of steam with the WA22 with highly compressed modern pop too. Not recommended at all!

What tubes & source were you using, Guess the tubes I am using have high gain (WE 422A +TS 5998 + TS 6SN7) as I cannot go above 70% on the volume pot & i find they sound pretty good & a definite improvement over HE 500. Also my source has pretty good dynamics (AGD NFB 7).

Will report back the improvements I hear over WA22 when I try them from my speaker amps.
