It's a joy to have Steve Eddy join us in this thread.  Knowledge is "power".  No pun intended..

Hehehe. Thank you for the kind words. Though not having any HE-6 experience under my belt, about all I can offer is some simple maths. biggrin.gif

My woo WA5 sounds fine with the he6. I think it is rated at 10 watts at 8 ohms. So why is this ok ?

Suffice to say that if you want 10 watts into 60 ohms, you need an amp that will push about 75 watts into 8 ohms. On the other hand, if the F5 will drive the HE-6 to sufficient levels, then all that's really needed is a few watts into 60 ohms in which case you're talking about an amp that'll do about 25 watts into 8 ohms.

And of course a given person's estimation of what's needed can depend a lot on what kind of music they listen to. If they're listening to music that's had a lot of compression applied during recording leaving little in terms of dynamic range, they would likely tend to be ok with less power. But those who listen to music with fairly high dynamic range, they may call for more power.

Thanks (which I neglected before). If possible, I really think people should try to go to stores and listen to different options. I have two very different power configurations but both work. I also have had a first watt in my system and it was fine in terms of driving the he6, just was not a presentation that I cared for.

Recently,my friend bought some 300b push pull with very nice acrosound transformers (same amps I have in 2a3) which are driving his 86 db speakers quite well -- sort of a surprise. When I took the first watt m2 over there, with more watts, music just fell apart. Go figure.

I listened to the f3 and j2. And they are not suitable for the he6. And we heard them both clip. And the presentation to me was bright and base light. Craig should chime in on this too. He ended up taking my krell home again to listen to it .

+1 preproman.

SE, I got your HE-6 experience right here! BTG is temporarily up against it with his schedule. Hard-wire my cans and hang out with 'em for a bit.

Hey guy, as you know Al & I had a mini meet today. I've been on the hunt for a great amp for my HE-6 so I've been trying everything I can get my hands on. We listened to and compared the Krell KAV-400xi, Aragon 8008, First Watt F3 and J2 with the MSB, AMR DP-777, and the Lampizator Gen 4 level 5 DAC's.

I left our meet frustrated because both the FW amps clipped on our classical music test track and lacked the bass presence and slam of the other amps. In contrast the other amps lacked the stat like resolving power of the FW amps, so  I was loving there bass and fuller sound but missing the lit up sound of the FW. Can the F5 be any better?

I don't understand how Darryl can get away with an F1J.

Well, I think you could either have a sub-optimal preamp, or some type of gain issue. You may also just prefer the tube amps colorations compared to them. Maybe SE could chime in here...

No love for my Krell?

The Taurus sounds pretty great with the HE-6 man, seriously (see my post about the Luxman intergrated amp a page or few ago). It's not as good as good speaker amps, but good enough that you won't feel like you're missing out on anything if you haven't recently heard better.

Assume the dacs were direct into the amps, so no separate pre ( I get that krell integrated)?

Yes, using the DACs pre amp/ volume control direct into the amps. The Krell has a preamp bypass mode, so we didn't use its volume control and it was fine no clipping.

Curious, did you try using the krell volume and bypass the dacs?
