HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone - Page 821

Here is my optimal set up for the HE-6 (source is M8 or the Sony HAP-S1

Some of us here are fortunate:wink: in that the HE-6 works well with iron we've already got. When synergy goes bad, I'll set the cans out on the curb:wink_face: long before any of my iron. Newcomers can get a really great start by reading this thread!

A beautiful ensemble.

Actually, Hifiman's website is a little confusing re: power requirements. First it says 2000 mW are enough, then it suggests that you really need 5000 mW. Either way the O2 and your average headphone jack can't produce anywhere near either of those amounts.

One consequence of this, is that you see a ton of open box Hifiman HE6's on sale on the internet, probably returned by people who could not drive them with weak amplifiers.

Open boxes give us the chance to buy cheaper. :)

+1

And if you have lots of time to kill and a lot to learn, look up the 'Amplifiers that drive the HE-6' thread.  I read it in its entirety.  Twice.  Then contacted some members with additional questions, now I've got a FirstWatt F3 on the way.  I currently drive it with my V200, 2.75 W into 50 Ohm.  Works well but apparently there's more to be had.  We'll see when my new kit arrives.

But does Hifiman even make money on the HE6?

Question #1: Why F3 and not... F5 (DIY)?

Question #2: What about the upcoming new Shiit Universal Headphone amp?

:)

I am sure that Dr. Fang does OK, judging by the size of their booth at CES.

But what does that have to do with the price of butter?

That is odd, though, that Hifiman would make such a power hungry headphone. It's a huge disadvantage from a marketing standpoint. Can any portable amp even drive it?

Indeed bad marketing standpoint, but I don't think Hifiman were aiming for huge sales volumes on this can. That's what the HE-400 and HE-500 are for

Having heard a good number of setups, the best sounding were ones with the most commitment. Dedicated setups just for a single headphone with gear aimed around getting the most out of it. I see people with 10 different cans but not one of held my attention.

I will, will only get to try it out mid April though as it's delivered to my address in Europe.  If it really makes a serious difference then I'll cover my head with ashes, eat the humble pie and -next time I'm in the US- hand deliver a case of rare Belgian beers -not that pilsener crap- and some exquisite chocolates to prepromans doorstep.

hmm, here is a $325 amp weighing "only" 1.2 pounds that seems like it could barely drive the HE6. Some people in the other thread liked it.

I guess this is as close as you're going to get to making the HE6 portable.

If you want portable why are you looking at the HE-6?

For me, basically for 2 reasons:

- All the 'F' amps are apparently very good and resolving but I was attracted to the F3 after reading up about the simplicity of the design (appealed on an aesthetic level) and getting feedback that it doesn't really colour the sound excessively but gives it just a hint of 'sweetness'/tube character (but without the disadvantages associated with tubes).  I like a bit of that in the music I listen to.  Have to add that it's a big gamble though as I'm buying unheard.

- No DIY for me due to two left hands and lack of knowledge.  If I invest the time it would take me to build into activities that generate income then I still easily come out on top paying a premium by just going for a straight purchase.

I didn't hear all Schiit stuff but wasn't too impressed by their amps which I did hear.
