I agree that the hd800 are the best dynamic headphones. They are capable of admirable speed.

There are strong and worthy aspects of the HD800 no doubt, but when it comes down to sonic qualities I feel the HE-6 is superior. I'm not even fully using the HE-6 to its potential yet I've already concluded the winner.

I have tried alot of various tube speaker amps at hifi shops, some chinese ones, and a vintage Cary I can't remember. The one I like best is my custom Crack + Speedball with film caps, 12BH7 with a well-regarded and rare Bendix 6080 rectifier. None of the Woo amps did it for me. I also heard the HD-800 off the WA22 a long time ago and dont remember anything special. The best SS amp I heard with them is The Wire BAL-BAL for sure, and I've heard numerous SS amps lol.

This we can agree. Overall I still like the HE-6 better. With certain genres, the HD800 reign supreme but if I could only have one - yes the HE-6.

I really enjoyed the BH Crack + Speedball. Probably the best pairing I've heard under $1500 with the HD800. Try to catch a meet that has any of the higher end EC amps or a Stratus, truly the best I've heard the HD800 albeit different flavors even though both are tube. I'd be interest to hear your thoughts if you ever get the chance

From what I've read the BAL-BAL wire type amp provides amazing results with the HD800. It's too bad I never had the patients to try it out with the HD800 I had, then again I'm glad I got on the HE-6 sooner tongue.gif. I absolutely love the HE-6, these headphones are wild, drivey, and hauntingly realistic.

Yeah, it really is a good pairing, and it gets quite a bit better with a 12BH7 and film caps. I also added silver and copper 7N wiring and bypassed the volume control for my LDR preamp, so it's definitely a league above the stock if that's what you heard :) I'll definitely keep an eye out for those amps you mentioned, thanks.

It really is an amazing amp for the HD-800, I was shocked just how invisible it really is. I need to tweak the gain structure up a notch for the HE-6 before I arrive at the final conclusion with the pairing.  Gotta love the HE-6 though! I have a few more amps I'll be building in the future to check out with the HE-6, namely the LPUHP which is also part of The Wire series. It'll be fully dual mono too, though they are going to be for my horns+supertweets, making it 4x LPUHP :) The boards just arrived today, but I have to finish up some F5's for you fellas first!

The HD00 is the best dynamic / planar for Classical music "only" the overly large soundstage does not work as an all rounder for me.  Plus the HE-6 kills the HD800 in vocals.

I'm not convinced tubes will "change" the HD800 into a different headphone nor would I want it to.

Tubes can be to much of a good thing - Too much tube-ness "can" take away what the HD800s are made for - precise imaging and accuracy .  "some" SS amp have great dynamics, I'm not sure Tube amps will provide any more dynamics over SS amps.

Also, I think SS amps have better control over the drivers. - this is made for better extension on both sides. This will also give you a faster decay, some may like a little longer decay - to each is own on that.

I have tubes in my DACs now - This is about all the tubes I think I need.  With SS DACs plus SS amps the HD800 can sound a little thin with some music.  Not sure how tube DAC plus tube amp would sound (maybe too much tube-ness).  I like the very slight distortion I'm getting - it gives the headphones some emotion, to much will make things sound off.

I pretty much agree with you as usual lol. I think the main thing the tube amps brings over the SS amps is the higher voltage for the HD-800. It really helps with their overall speediness, but can be syrupy with many implementations. The power section remains paramount. I guess that really goes for all amps from my findings though. SS does give a tighter response because of the super low impedance, and with my experience of The Wire BAL-BAL and F5 being DC-coupled, the bass response improves over other amps that aren't.

I can't really agree here. I've had quite a few tubes amps and yes some (especially OTL) have that syrupy, "tubey" sound but none of that is present in any of the higher end tube amps I've heard. For me, it was an eye-opener hearing a few of these amps, because to me they sounded more neutral (and natural) than most of the SS amps I've heard. Control was never a problem, and none of the generic tubey issues were present. It is hard to explain, but it is one of those things that need to be experienced before being judged. I mostly agree that doubling up on tubes with a tube DAC and a tube amp might take away from the overall clarity and transparency (i.e too much coloration), but then again - the Stratus+AMR doesn't sound bad at all.

My HD800's are amazingly fast with my 1 ohm SS Master-6. Doubt any, typically slower, tube amp is going to make them any faster.

Brunk you have a way with words. If I did not have a pair , I would be scouring the internet fora pair. .

It seems tube amps are shooting for SS speed and clarity while adding a bit of color / distortion in for good measure.  However, some SS amps has that same (what is it) 2nd order harmonic distortion that tubes amps has, in that case I see no reason to be bothered with tubes.

I'm looking forward to the Dynahi.  It was once said to be the best SS "headphone" amp ever made.  More so now that KG is using a design from Nelson Pass, it should be pretty good.

Yea, I think you are spot on and I agree sometimes I'd rather not have to wait for tubes to warm up, etc. Having both will definitely be a treat. :D

Yeah, it became the HD800 vs HE-6 thread, only it managed to stay thoughtful and considered, instead of what usually happens when threads stray into comparisons of highly regarded headphones smily_headphones1.gif
