Yes there are benefits the UPA-200 / XPA-200 has over the a-100.  First it's fully discrete and dual differential, where the a-100 is not.  One of the main reasons to go with the a-100 is it already has a volume control.  With the UPA-200 you would need a pre amp of some kind.  Othere than that as you go up in the Emo line the better the amps get.

Brunk or SWA can build you a pre amp if you DAC doesn't have one.

This is a great place to "start".  This will allow you to put more money in a better DAC.  The D2 is also a good start. However, if you can spend a bit more maybe look into the MHDT line of DACs - If you want to keep tubes in the chain.  http://dhost.info/mhdtlab/mhdt%20dac%20families.htm  This will be a step up from the D2

BTG audio is also a great place to get your cable made.  I would ask about hardwiring.  I'm big on that.

Makes sense. Unfortunately I can't swing anything super fancy yet but I can decide between the UPA-200 and a preamp and a TBI Millenia. Which would you choose between those?

I'm in for cheap and gets the job done. Besides they're all the same with the lights turned off..

On a serious note/question, what's the burn-in time with the he-6?

Lol Ken, you guys are terrible  I gave my HE-6 about 48 hours of pink noise. I think it opened them up, but I can't really remember.

I cannot partake in this discussion. . I am not a believer of burnin. I am a believer in us getting more information in the sounds we here. And I am not saying anyone here is wrong either so put away the lynch rope. .

I burned mine in for about 48 hours with listening sessions in the evenings. I'm not sure I heard any difference over the burn in. The first time I heard my HE-6 was such a "wow" moment, even fresh off the delivery truck they were amazing.

The place where I got mine specified 150-200 hours for burn in (the engineer is a serious fan and I remember having seen some documentation that mentioned 150 hours) but iirc they pretty much settled in after about 50 hours, didn't detect any change beyond that time so either it was very subtle or absent.

Right here. The bass and soundstage goes through a period of terrible and back to focus. Welcome to the club DarKen23.

Thank you kindly. Ive converted and sided with the dark side over the HD800. The HE-6's characteristics is definitely more enjoyable for me.

Well you guys have convinced me to set this whole process in motion. I just listed my stuff in the classifieds so that I can go for the HE-6, TBI Millenia and whichever of my ODAC or Maverick Audio D2 I prefer most in the rig.

When I'm not evaluating, I'm usually in-session three nights a week on average. Will often engage in two hour warm-ups, while I make sure everything else in my night is  just so. In my absence, I'll either leave music playing or the IsoTek file (2hrs 5min).

Both my cans and cable took about 200 hours to settle in and saw three phases:

1.   Much ado about nuthin' (unimpressed)

2.   Merde! (t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e)

3.   Make it a double! (skippin' sleep)

This just in!

My pads from Lawton Audio just shipped from.... :blink:Rhode Island? That's right, baby! I don't care if it was :pMARS, they're here on 2 January!!!
