I'm thinking of a FirstWatt S1 or McIntosh MC275. But right now, I need to make some fund for it.

That's exciting to hear! I know what you mean about establishing funds. Two months ago, I sat out some empty tea tins for my Woo (WA5 monos). But I've got to stop looking inside them - they're not going to get filled up any faster! :o

The woo is exceptional as an amp, for the he6. And as for looks it is stunning too.

I enjoyed my '6 Special Edition' when I had it. Perhaps, 2014, I will debut......... my custom Woo. And push the HE-6 around a bit.  Of course, we're doin' that already.

The MC275 is indeed fabulous with it; I haven't tried the S1 however.

Now that I have a setup I'm quite content with (SA-2 + EF-6) - especially in terms of out-of the head experience, which was lacking before, I tried the Alpha Pads with the HE-6 again.

Same conclusion: the sound gets etched and fatiguing. It's not bright in the absolute sense, but It feels like I'm getting reflections all over the place. This all talk about the Fazor and Jerg's damping guide probably lead me to this conclusion but it's the best conclusion I could draw.

The HE-5LE, on the contrary, has no such issue with the Alpha Pads. Everything gets better with no apparent downside to the sound. The 5LEs have a damping foam with a star-shaped opening covering the inner driver. The HE-6 only have the (plain) quarter foam so the magnets are much more exposed.

I'd be curious to try the 5LEs foam in the HE-6. I don't want to destroy my 5LEs, though...

Why not just do the fully objective-based approach and do the Fuzzor mod (both sides of each drivers even)? This seems like a cannibalistic and potentially disappointing thing to do. For all we know the star-shaped foam may be for the sake of something else (e.g. changing HE5LE's tonal balance).

It's also completely different from the piece of foam used in HE6, for one one is on the face-side of the driver, the other on the grill-side. My best guess is the HE6 foam is for attenuating the treble, while the HE5LE felt is acting as some sort of bass-port thing.

Both foams are on the face-side of the driver. Maybe the 5LEs have it on both sides, though, I didn't check.

I could definitely use the 5LEs tonality with the 6s technicalities!

The Fuzzor is interesting, I might give it a shot. The Audeze Vegan also have my interest (same goes for the LCD-X... but it's a more expensive mod :D)

Well from the photo you posted above that is definitely the grill side (with the wire leads to the driver polarities). But yes it does look to be on both sides

Switched the Alpha Pads back on the HE-5LE. This is much better.

I briefly tried the 6s with the velour pad, too. While the pleather pads were a no-go with the HE-500, I don't feel pleather and velour sound that different with the 6s. I didn't do any critical comparison but nothing "wrong" jumped at me like it used to be the case with the 500s (muffled mids with pleather), or with the Alpha Pads (glary/reflective sound).

Back the the 5LEs. While they certainly cannot match the full mids and level of refinement/details of their younger sibling, I really like the tonality. Also, I think there are still reflections going on with the HE-6 - event with the pleather and their thicker cloth - because I can hear some instrument better with the 5LEs. It's not more detailed, but I hear them better nonetheless. The sound is more cohesive too.

I don't know if I have a particularly reflection skin or what, but that's my experience (assuming it's indeed reflection that's causing all this).

Do you experience this "reflection" in the treble region of the FR? Or in the midrange.

Also can you give some music examples where this glare/reflection becomes obvious?
