HifiMAN HE-6 Planar Magnetic Headphone - Page 678

FWIW, mine measure out at 49 Ohm, absolutely stock and measured by a friend who's an electronics engineer using what I assume is precision equipment.  The cups really do look piano black, no violet sheen at all but I've got daylight lamps installed all over the place here so maybe that makes a difference.  They were produced somewhere in Q4 2012 and I purchased them through an authorised dealer in Germany (brick and mortar shop).  I obviously only have one pair but to me they sound great so i'm not worried.  The rest of the finish is a bit rough/industrial around the edges, no different in quality from my HE-500 (but on that one the cups are what I'd describe as pearl grey and obviously the wiring is different).  We're not talking Sennheiser finish quality here but the sound is good and that's what matters to me although arguably at least on the HE-6 it should be pristine given the price point at which these are sold.

My custom-made DHC Macromolecule SE cable for HE-6, made of pure OCC copper litz wire.

Hopefully this adds a bit of warmth on the mids and bass, and more transparency compared to the stock cable.

Hello All,

I took my newly purchased he-6 to a Hifiman store today. Good news is they are not fakes and I doubt anybody has a fake. Sad news is the factory seems to have a lot of inconsistency in how they build these. Mine has 4 screws holding the plastic ring in the cup, the display model had 6 screws and looked much more solid. The color of the display was true black, like mine, but the owner said some have a purple hue. The headband pivot on mine was slightly smaller. The screws used throughout were of different size and type. I spoke to a worker at the shop and they said that there is definitely lack of consistency in all the Hifiman products. The 901 player, he-6, even the ef-6.

I personally think their product design and function are amazing. I love the sound of the HE-6 and the EF-6 amp was also very nice. The 901 player is one of the best sounding, had serious issues with the OS and it overheated. But the shop said only some have issues. This is where I have a problem. These items are not inexpensive, so having less than great Manufacturing quality and QC is really not acceptable. I truly hope Hifiman improves in this area, otherwise it will eventually impact their reputation.

For all of you that have your cans and love the sound, I say congratulations on having gotten a good set. For those of you that think the HE-6 sound terrible, check your amp, then try exchanging them for another pair, because they sound amazing. If not, something is wrong.

I am done for now. I will return mine and buy a new pair when I find a good deal. For now it is back to my HD650 which are fine, but not at all as good as the HE-6.

Thanks again for everyone's help and kindness. It is much appreciated.

Gorgeous. Congrats on bringing it home, songmic. Can't wait for you to spend a couple of hundred hours with it.

Actually, it's not home yet but on its way. The picture was taken by Peter (owner of Double Helix Cables) before he shipped it to me.

Curiously, did you have them measured or self-measured?
