How to Destroy Angels

Thread Starter

Disclosure:  I have been a fan of Trent Reznor for about 20 years now.  I have a 36"x24" shot of NIN I took during their last tour above the TV in the livingroom... yes I'm a fan boy.  So I'm probably pretty biased.

I am very excited by this new band.  I've only heard the two songs so far ("A drowning" and "The Space in Between") but there seems to be a lot of promise here.  Mariqueen has a much better voice than I had realized, the music seems to be an excellent blend between what's decidedly Trent, and ... more than one new elements.  In some ways the singles seem a bit more packaged and poppy than I'm used to, but its not that they lack depth.

In some ways, so far, this is NIN with a female vocalist.  And yet, there's more to it.  It makes me wish more artists had enough success that they were able to experiment and reinvent themselves more often.  I hear things in these songs that made me love NIN's music back in the early 90's, things from their recent work, and new textures and direction.

What are you all thinking so far?

If you've not checked them out yet, please do:

Just my opine that the those two songs are okay. I think you're spot on that it's NIN with a female lead. A Drowning has all the motifs of a typical NIN song - funky synth line, delicate piano stabs, slow build. I'm a little more excited about The Space Between, 'cause its hook is classic NIN. My main hang up is with her voice. To me, it's uninspiring. I can't blame the man for wanting to work his new love and probably do the same. Yet I can' t help but imagine the same songs with say  kaRIN, or Toni Halliday, as those two had been rumored whenever the idea of TR side projects had come up before.

I consider myself another old school fan; saw the Pretty Hate Machine tour in fact. Although my passion dulled since the post Fragile break, and of course there are no living room panoramas where I reside. You sir, are the winner! Glad you are excited about the new tunes.

The EP is now out. 320kbps MP3 is free, and for $2 you can upgrade to FLAC, Apple Lossless, or 24-bit WAV. http://www.howtodestroyangels.com/store/

I just paid 2 dollars for the FLAC and MP3. I look forward to giving it a listen.

I just heard The Space In Between. Interesting stuff, I'll definitely get the MP3s and decide from there whether the lossless is worth it. At least from this song, I don't think Mariqueen's voice is bad at all. Nobody can match kaRIN of course, but I'm happy to listen to Two Headed Monster when I want to hear her.

Well I've given it all a good listen now. For NIN listeners, this'll probably be up the street of those who like The Slip and Ghosts I-IV, if at all. The songs are predominantly dark, and range from a slow to medium-fast pace. Vocals tend to be a bit sterile and/or distant, fitting the lyrics and styling of the songs. There's lots of synth, droning guitar, and methodical progression, building a common atmosphere for the extended play.

Let me put it this way: the voice is purely atmospheric. It's like a veil over the aggressive edge NIN has/had. Needs more listens to decide if that's good or bad.

I've enjoyed it more than I thought.  This is nothing more than Trent Reznor comfort food. The guy could write some of these songs in his sleep. One might even say that BBB and Fur Lined border on self-plagiarization. The dude is in his forties, and like many established artists who have endured to that point, you kind of know what you're going to get. For fans like I, that is just fine as long as the quality is good.

Still ho hum with her voice, but as zmd stated, it's muted and distorted enough to not matter really. That was a smart move on TR's part.
