Questions on signal Cables(LOD, Aux, etc...)

Since the signal power is very minimal, small gauge wire is unnecessary right?  Also, how does the insulating material factor into the way the signal is transfered?  Is LOD cables susceptable to noticible noise, is braiding really necessary?  Wouldn't shielded cables provide better isolation from noise?

Since the signal power is very minimal, small gauge wire is very normal.

From electrical noise, such as strong background interference, then it's a possibility. However it depends on the circumstances, such as signal strength, shield type, ground connection impedance, etc..
