Update 5/24: This sale is now suspended. I am going to keep it for a little while longer while I ponder my options.
It's a sad day, but the time has come for me to say goodbye to the world of headphones. I expect to come back to headphones at some point in the future, but for now, it's time to move on.
That being said, I am offering my beloved Audio Technica Raffinato set for sale. This consists of the HA5000 amp, the W5000 headphones, and a matching headphone stand.
The amp and headphones were both purchased new from PriceJapan in 2007. The stand was custom made by Steve Tice at S2 Audio in 2008 to match the finish of the W5000 headphones.
The amp is in perfect shape; there are no marks on the amp that I can see. Note that this is a Japanese amp that runs on 100V power. I have used a stepdown voltage converter to keep it at 100V, which keeps the amp much cooler than if it is run straight out from the wall at 120V. The one defect is with the power cord: my cat loves chewing cords, and there are some bite marks in the power cord.
The headphones are also in great shape. I don't see any scratches on the earcups. The wings are in perfect condition, and there is plenty of life left in the pads. The cord is also in great shape (the cat didn't get to this one). The metal loops have been bent so that the headphones fit my relatively narrow head. The majority of issues that people have with the W5000 are related to a poor fit, and there is a decided difference between the sound when the cups fit tight and when they are loose.
The headphone stand is made with curly maple and macassar ebony wood. The finish of the stand is a fantastic complement to the headphones, and they look stunning together.
I still have the original boxes for the HA5000 and W5000, as well as all of the original materials. The W5000 also comes with the velvet-lined flight case and cord bag. Both the HA5000 and W5000 will be shipped double-boxed, and the headphone stand will be packed up well for shipping.
If the headphones and amp were purchased new today from PriceJapan, they would cost US$2100 including shipping. The stand on its own cost $150. For all three pieces together, I am asking US$XXXX including Paypal fees and shipping within the US. I can also include a 120V <-> 100 V step-down converter if the buyer is interested. I live in the US, but I am willing to ship worldwide, though additional shipping costs would apply. I would like to keep the entire set together, but would be willing to separate if there is sufficient interest in each piece.
