What's Good in Las Vegas?

I am planning on visiting there for a couple days next week with a friend of mine and I'm not sure what the best use of our time will be. I would like to do some sightseeing, maybe catch a show and avoid the bad restaurants. From what I've seen so far I shouldn't have much trouble finding a decent hotel on the strip for under $200 a night. I'm open to any insight you guys can offer about visiting Las Vegas. If I can only see one or two shows, I would like to know the most what the most enjoyable ones going are. So far the only things I know I should see are the Stratosphere and the Pinball hall of fame.

There's so much I don't know where to begin.  This webside is generally a good guide to start from:

http://www.vegas.com/traveltips/

Buffet restaurants tend to be disappointing, so unless you like eating LOTS, stick with non-buffet well-reviewed restaurants.

Big famous shows are expensive, but moderately famous ones can be very good.  Moreover, tickets for them can be had with large discounts at Tix 4 Tonight booths on the strip.

Do NOT go to one of the "hot" nightclubs on weekend nights during "normal" hours.  You will wait hours to get in, just to find out it wasn't worth it, most likely.

The rest of the recommendations will have to depend on whether your "friend" is a guy or a gal, and what kind of a friend :)

The "just friend" is a gal.  I wouldn't mind visiting some night spots, but I'm not the sort to wait in line to get into any club.

I saw the Beatles/Cirque show Love show last month.

It was pretty mind blowing at a few points and there were times when I simply couldn't take it all in.

Really good sound, visuals and staging. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house.

If you want to go clubbing, go to XS at Encore. I think the capacity is around 2000. Its usually crowded on saturday. If you do go, make sure to line up early (before 10) because the line gets extremely long, but moves at a decent pace.

You can avoid lines by calling ahead earlier in the day and buying VIP passes to whichever club you want to go to. I don't think they're much more expensive than paying cover, and you get in through faster lines, bypassing the suckers.

I highly recommend buying a pass to the clubs at the Palms for Saturday night. Ghostbar at the Palms is a fantastic place to start your night - it has incredible views of the strip (it's an outdoor rooftop bar). The main club at the Palms is Rain on the first floor, which has the Perfecto dance party every Saturday night, DJed by Paul Oakenfold, which is really fun, complete with pyrotechnics, an acrobatic show, etc. I'm not really a dance club guy, but I've had an awesome time at Perfecto every time I've been (my girlfriend and I have been 3 times in the last year and a half or so).

Other places I've tried are Tao (cool, but a madhouse - too crowded) and Tryst (awesome!), as well as Rehab (a ridiculous pool party) on Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy - I'm jealous! I started getting the Vegas itch a few weeks ago...

Oh yeah, Hoover Dam is very cool to see. It's huge.

In terms of shows, the Cirque du Soleil stuff is amazing - the ones that are most often recommended are O and Mystere (I've only seen Ka, Zumanity, and La Reve).

I saw Ka with my family this past summer, and my uncle, the Vegas native, said that it wasn't one of the more spectacular shows. Pretty light on acrobatics in comparison, apparently. I enjoyed it, though.

Hoover Dam was really awesome, but super hot. My sister managed to wear a fleece jacket the entire time... She's nuts.

I truly believe one of the most spectacular things about Vegas is the shows. We have the opportunity to watch several on our last visit. Of all the Cirque du Soleil-esque shows, Le Reve, at the Wynn, was my personal favorite. Ka, while striking, was less impressive - the same goes for Mystere. In another genre, David Copperfield was not on the same caliber, but a valid amusement in his own right, and a worthwhile investment if you like magic.

Regrettably, I have not seen it, but I have heard wonderful things about O at the Bellagio. If you have a chance to stay there (which we did), the fountains are a sight not to be missed, particularly after dark. I would have stayed out all night if I could have.

Tao was my favorite club when i went years back, but it depends on how much experience you have in dance clubs cause in Vegas they can look useless and stupid or amazing pending your expectation level. mine is a bit high so i really didn't like most of them..so i just drank and drank to make up for the disappointment, which worked out great cause i got to play duck/duck/goose with everyone waiting at the bar without getting knocked by someone..

I would recommend you stay at a Hotel in the middle of the strip if you plan on walking the strip and visiting the different hotels, i stood at the Mirage and have no complaints but it was an older crowd there which you may not like (i loved it cause i felt younger and in turn acted even dumber).

if you or your friend likes to shop there are two or three great places to go, i only made it too Caesars Palace before ruining my credit card.

the pools are cool for relaxing but be warned about those sweet & tall drinks they serve, they are expensive and loaded with alcohol (which may be a good thing, in my case it was)

anywhere in Vegas you'll need money, even if its just for basic's and food its still going to cost you so bring a good amount of spending money with you..really Vegas is the one place you can't really do anything without spending money. even sitting by the pools or walking the strip will cost you in drinks/water.

if you are not much of a gambler but just wanna do a bit of it cause you are in Vegas then go early mourning as the Tables are lower priced, if you want to hit the machines go late night cause they are empty. if you hit the tables early you can find alot of really nice dealers that will teach you how to gamble and have fun without being stupid..and remember to tip your dealer when you leave the table.

walk the strip in the evening, its really a sight to see with everything lit up and all the different kind of people around you, just remember there are always wolves in the pack waiting to snag an easy target, basically be smart about your looks, who's around you and where on the strip you are (you'll know when you get to the rougher parts). also since your friend is a girl you may want to keep that extra eye on which arm her purse is hanging/being held. Vegas is safe at night just don't think you're at Disney World.

have fun and spend alittle money but remember to relax and go with the flow after all whats happens in Vegas stays there!
