Interested in building Ribbon/Foil interconnect

Thread Starter

I am interested in building a pair of ribbon interconnects because I like the look of the these flat cables.  I looked around but I have not found any DIY instructions on building such a cable.  I have seen ribbon cable used for speakers http://www.flatwirestore.com

I also found these http://shop.mapleshadestore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ULTRATHIN which is close to what I am looking to build.

Can anyone with experience in cable building help me figure out how to build such a cable?

Cheers.

I've been building my own ribbon interconnects, and speaker wires for years. It is a LOT to discuss though. The rules of simple LC&R get weird when working with ribbons. PM me with your questions, and I will see if I can go back though some of my emails to friends about the subject, and will copy and paste the info to you.

My question...

How do you fit them into a 3.5?

I'm quite stumped actually.

Oh do you have pics?

LOL ... That's why I was saying it will require a LOT of typing.... Just so many variables with foil. Which foil are you using ? What width is it ?  What is the per conductor gauge ?   What is the foil width ?  Etc, etc ....

I'm building a set for a friend later this week ... I can snap photos then.

please do..i'm interested in trying these.

Pictorial will be nice =)

OK ... Go buy yourself a yard of Muslim, and a bottle of Fabri-Tac fabric glue from your fabric store. Buy yourself a roll of the widest teflon tape you can find. Also, you MUST HAVE a bottle of Caig Pro Gold.

I don't know what you are currently using, but I highly recommend a set of Eichmann Bullet RCAs ( gold) , or for less money a set of these :

This is a must, and you have to have these to proceed correctly.

You have to be careful about the purity of your conductor material. I purchased foil that is 99.999 purity, and now that supplier is no longer in business. Luckily, I still have a supply.

Also, on the teflon sleeve .... How you plan on gluing/attaching it ?   Ever tried to glue teflon ?

Just some of the things I had to overcome.

I have not found anything that doesn't stick with epoxy.

Hi besides flatwire, is there any other place to buy these?

I need only like 3 ft max.

Buy what ?  Foil ?

Really good purity in foil is hard to find under $150 for a very small roll. I suggest buying a foil inductor and unwinding it ... but I really suggest doing detailed electrical measurements if you are using it as signal wire !!!   Capacitance, resistance, and inductance can eat you alive and actually FRY your pre-amp/amp if you do not know what you are doing. Foil is tricky, measure it !

Have a look at the Duelund foil in silk (impregnated with oil) hook up wire from PCX (partsconexion). It makes life a helluva lot easier for making up these kinds of cables.

Man, I really wanted to use the Deuland conductors badly, but they are just a HUGE gauge for making interconnects unfortunately. Do you have a resource that has those conductors smaller than say 22 gauge ?

I believe big ass RCA would fit maybe for grounding.

Then use a solid core/stranded  for signal?

I wonder how stiff it'll be..

For RCA, maybe switchcrafts or viablues..

looks interesting though

Yeah the Duelund stuff is big with the smallest gauge being 18 (IIRC) but I think that should be manageable if you spec large RCA jacks (Neutrik Pro Fi for instance might work... the same plugs used with Nordost Flatline series cables). The trick is (my best guess) gently curve the foil to fit. My main question is the joint between the jack and foil...is it cold weld (press fit) or soldered ?
