lol, im pretty much in the same situation and hoping - but seems like it's a no go.

get a refurbed 3G for the China trip and then wait for the 5G.

Nobody has mentioned it since the OP, but the possible DAC compatibility is by far the most compelling reason to wait.  I'm no expert on apple rumors/plans but here is what LintHart noted in the ipad thread:

 

"remember the software 4.0 is coming and also the new iphone may very well support the camera connection kit (it is gaining the upgraded iphoto style faces and events etc)."
