What are your thoughts about Android and PMPs?

Thread Starter

I own an HTC Incredible which runs the Android OS and I absolutely love it.

That being said, some companies have tried and failed (Archos to mention one) in making a good Android PMP.  But if well impemented and backed by powerful enough hardware Android could be the next iPod Touch killer.

What are your thoughts about Android making its way into the PMP game?

I have a Motorola Droid and I am as well waiting for someone to do some decent PMP SW for it

If multimedia playback can be correctly implemented, as well as a viable custom EQ, I'd never even LOOK at another iPhone and think "man, I wish my Droid could do that". Even though the presets on the iPhone are crappy, it's still there. Give us what Apple refuses to give us to this day,.....Android will have quite a few more converts that way.

Still, I do love the freedom Android does provide for customization, free apps & games, I can change the battery to a higher capacity if I want to, etc. It's just 1 small thing I need to have a complete "convergence" device, and Android is close - and the iPhone is almost there as well.

Each has pluses and minuses - I'd just want Android to even up the competition (makes for quicker innovation IMO).

I was very disappointed with the multimedia suite of Android. There isn't a lot of functionality, and I was especially disappointed that my Milestone with 2.1 couldn't even do basic software equalization with the default player (nevermind the weak interface). It's a late 2009 smartphone with a 2010 smartphone OS -- there are no excuses for this.

Android needs a lot of work for its multimedia features to get up to snuff. It has the advantage of being very extensible -- an Android device machined solely for PMP usage could very well do multimedia well.

I firmly believe that Android is still picking up steam. And as far as Android-based PMPs are concerned, the future is looking bright. Rockchip has developed an Android-optimized (whatever that means) ARM processor. Seeing how Rockchip is well-established with Chinese PMP makers, I'm fairly optimistic. RAmos' W7 could turn out to be a nice budget tablet/PMP.
