Orpheus,

mybe you should give a chance to better phono preamp and TT. It can be drastical improvment.

Poor TT wont do much good and also poorly designed phono preamp also.

And therein lies the rub, Of course, a well designed TT and phono stage will sound great when compared to a cheaply designed SACD player, for starters Geek compared Sony NS500V (entry level player) to a Meridian 507.24 and decided that the Meridian sounded better. If it didn't then Meridian should be caned. IOW if a £2000( I am British) TT, cartridge, phono combo sounded worse than a £1000 CDP, then the designers should be called to question. I do not discount preferences, however vinyl is being grossly oversold by enthusiasts. It responds to price/performance ratios like any other equipment.

If anything, even more so -- the price/performance curve is much smoother and more linear, whereas with CD it's more exponential (above a certain price the gains become very small indeed). Turntables can keep improving in a very real way into the high 5 figures! Fwiw, the $73,500 Rockport Sirius III is considered a bargain for the price by Stereophile, probably grabbing the crown of "world's best turntable."

As far as cartridges, I'd put them into the "headphone-like" category as far as price/performance... and phono stages are really just like any other type of amp as far as price/performance goes.

yes, i would like to actually. just never got the chance. held two meets here, but no one ever brought a good setup. guess these things are too much of a hassle to move. i dunno. but yes, i'd give it a fair chance if i have a chance to demo good one. but so far, i'm not impressed.
