If anything, even more so -- the price/performance curve is much smoother and more linear, whereas with CD it's more exponential (above a certain price the gains become very small indeed). Turntables can keep improving in a very real way into the high 5 figures! Fwiw, the $73,500 Rockport Sirius III is considered a
bargain for the price by Stereophile, probably grabbing the crown of "world's best turntable."
As far as cartridges, I'd put them into the "headphone-like" category as far as price/performance... and phono stages are really just like any other type of amp as far as price/performance goes.
